It all started with an episode of Gossip Girl back in 2009*…

I couldn’t even begin to recall what the episode was about, but all I  know is that Serena van der Woodsen was wearing the most amazing coat ever, and I immediately set out on a mission to make it mine.  My online search revealed that this style of coat is called a greatcoat, or watchcoat, and was popular in the 19th century as a military uniform and casual wear for the wealthy.  The particular coat in question turned out to be a prohibitively expensive Rag & Bone number that was completely soldout online.

Not one to give up easily, I searched high and low for an alternative, but with no such luck.  There was even an unfortunate incident with a vintage coat I found on eBay that smelled like a musty old basement and was apparently designed for a woman with no shoulders.  Almost two years later, I still couldn’t get that coat out of my head.  Needless to say, I was absolutely ecstatic when I found this jacket recently and at a great price to boot!

*Yes, I am a grown woman who watches Gossip Girl… don’t judge!
