When: Monday, August 16th, 2010

Where: Work + Lord & Taylor Facelift Preview Event

What: Dress (vintage), shoes ($30 Elie Tahari via Filene’s Basement), handbag ($30 Tommy Hilfiger via Filene’s Basement)

I’m still getting my feet wet with this whole fashion blog scene, so I was feeling a little pressure when I chose my outfit for this event.  In general, I have no problems picking out an outfit for myself.  But knowing that you’re going to be in a room full of stylish ladies somehow turns the heat up a notch.  Monday was no different, and I almost had a mini-panic attack when I couldn’t decide what to wear…

Then I gave myself a mental slap and remembered that I’m an avid practitioner of the girl scout motto: BE PREPARED!  Because I hate the feeling of having nothing to wear, I pretty much always keep a knockout dress or two waiting in the wings for occasions such as these.  I almost forgot about this one that I Scored! earlier this summer.

Fashion crisis averted, and I didn’t have to worry about someone else showing up in the same dress.

What about you guys? Do you ever experience wardrobe freakout before big (or not so big) events?  If so, what’s your coping strategy?

P.S.
Special shout-out to the wonderful bloggers I met on Monday: Rachel, Alissa, Jordan, and Tiffany!

Closet Confection: In Plain Black and White

When: Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Where: Work

What: Tank + Skirt (Forever 21), shoes (Franco Sarto), necklace (Jess LC)

This title of this post reminds me of when I first started working in NYC after college and the bulk of my work outfits were black and white (mostly black).  I’m not sure how that happened, but pretty much all of my skirts, pants, and dresses were black for that first year after graduating. While I still do like to wear all black on occasion, I’m glad I snapped out of that phase because I love color!

Speaking of things I love, check out my new necklace!  Isn’t it great?  It’s stamped in braille and reads “Dream Bigger” on the other side.  Definitely a mantra I need to keep in mind daily.

And what about you guys?  Any personal mantras or pearls of wisdom that have been on your mind lately?

Closet Confection: All the Pretty Flowers

When: Monday, July 26th, 2010

Where: Work + Dinner at Cowgirl Seahorse

What: Dress (The Limited), shoes ($40 diBa via Filene’s Basement), handbag ($10 H&M)

Nothing cures a case of the Mondays like a fresh bouquet of flowers…
And if that doesn’t work out, you can always try wearing a floral print.

I bought this dress almost 10 years ago, which I think makes it officially vintage now!  I remember feeling so sophisticated every time I wore it, and it was my go-to outfit for dressy summer events in college.  I am by no means as small as I was 10 years ago, but luckily the wrap style is forgiving.  A strategically placed safety pin is all it took to transport me back in time (without flashing anyone).

I am also by no means a hoarder.  In fact, I routinely go through my closet and get rid of pieces that I haven’t worn in ages or that no longer reflect my personal style.  But somehow, this dress always winds up making the cut.  I can’t say that about a lot of my other items.

And what about you guys?  Do you tend to keep items for years or do you prefer to purge and restock each seasonWhat’s a favorite piece in your wardrobe that you’ve been rocking for 5 years or more?
