Closet confection outfit of the day: Hump Day

When: Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Where: Work

What: Tee (J. Crew), skirt (Banana Republic), shoes (Franco Sarto)

I was feeling kind of blah yesterday.  Why is it that shorter work weeks somehow manage to seem longer than regular ones?  It also didn’t help that I had a 7:30am meeting to go to.

I’m pretty much a zombie before 9am, so my somewhat obsessive tendency to organize and reorganize my wardrobe paid off that morning.  I had decided to wear this skirt the night before, but I had no idea how I was going to style it.  And at 6am, I was in no condition to be creative.  Luckily, I’d recently unearthed these shoes during my spring/summer wardrobe switch, and they were staring me right in the face when I opened my closet door.  I have tons of t-shirts, so I arrange them in my drawer by color and fold them in such a way that any embellishments are clearly visible—making it easy to grab the one I want.  This tee was laying neatly on top, and I liked how the beading played off the swirly pattern of the skirt.

Looking back, I may have thrown on my red patent pumps and a few silver bangles if I’d had more time on my hands.  But overall I think this came together nicely… especially considering I was still half asleep.

Closet Confection: Naughty Secretary

When: Monday, May 24th, 2010

Where: Work + Dinner & drinks

What: Vintage 80s secretary dress ($20 eBay), black patent leather belt (Calvin Klein via Filene’s Basement), bronze peep-toe sandals ($15 Nine West store closing sale)

This dress was a result of my Murder, She Wrote Netflix marathon finally catching up with me.  Seeing all of that 80s fashion day-after-day caused me to go on an eBay treasure hunt for secretary dresses and pussy-bow blouses a while back, and I got more than my share.

It came hemmed a little shorter than I was expecting.  So to make the dress more work appropriate, I wore it with black tights, black patent pumps and a blazer during the day (sorry I didn’t get pics!).  After hours, I slipped off my hose and jacket, exchanged the pumps for cute sandals, and off I went.

Voila! An easy work to after hours transformation.

Closet Confection: White Tee & Khakis

When: Friday, May 21st, 2010

Where: Work + Cirque du Soleil’s Banana Schpeel*

What: Embellished Tee (J. Crew), khaki skirt (Banana Republic), belt (H&M), shoes (Nicole Miller via Filene’s Basement)

Fridays are fairly laid back in my office, and I didn’t feel like putting on anything too fancy today.  You’ll probably never catch me wearing an actual pair of khakis, so this is my take on the classic American look.

I’m a little obsessed with J. Crew’s embellished tees, so I try and collect them whenever they go on sale.  This skirt is also a favorite, but I rarely wear it because it’s such a pain to iron those darn pleats.

All in all, tonight was a great wrap-up to an exhausting week.  This was my 3rd Cirque du Soleil performance (thank goodness I narrowly escaped having to sit through Zumanity two years back).  While the show was definitely fun, the production quality didn’t live up to what I was expecting.  It just didn’t have “ooh-and-ahh” factor I usually associate with Cirque.  Luckily, the tickets were free, so I was a happy camper.

*The evening’s activities also included a naughty side-excursion that involved hotdogs and cupcakes with way too much frosting, don’t ask.
