When: Monday, June 14th, 2010

Where: Work

What: Dress ($10 vintage via Hester Street Fair), belt ($13 J.Crew clearance sale), shoes ($40 diBa via Filene’s Basement)

I felt very ladylike when I stepped into the office yesterday wearing my “new” vintage dress.  I was originally planning to raise the hem, but then I remembered that I don’t know how to sew.  Also, paying my dry cleaner $20 to do the job for me seemed to dampen the thrill of getting a $10 dress in the first place. So instead, I opted to just pair it with some sky high heels.  Speaking of sky high heels….

Don’t these remind you of something?

Lemme give you a hint:

YSL Tribute Pumps

Yep!  My shoes are almost an exact replica of Yves St. Laurent’s Tribute platform pump (minus, of course, the fine Italian leather and magical elves that come out to play and solve all your life’s problems because you paid $800 for these shoes).

I wasn’t intentionally trying to buy a knock-off when I purchased these last year.  But I’m now proud to realize that I got the look for less.  A whole heck of a lot less.

If you’re wondering what’s up with my belt, I had to improvise because it was a bit too long to wear so high on my waist.  Because it went so perfectly with this dress (and because I was running late and didn’t have time to figure out an alternative), I decided to make due and just wrap it around itself a few times.  I actually think it looks kinda cute this way.

It’s amazing what a little pluck and determination can do.  What last minute tricks have you come up with to make an outfit or an article of clothing work for you?

When: Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Where: Work & Office-Warming Party

What: Dress ($30 Vintage 80s via eBay), tights (Calvin Klein), shoes ($20 Moda via Filene’s Basement), necklace (H&M), handbag ($99 Cole Haan via RueLaLa)

Since I was going to a party after work, I needed an outfit that was both office-appropriate yet festive.  This 80s vintage secretary dress fit the bill perfectly, and I felt oh so chic while wearing it.  The original belt was missing when I purchased it, so I put on a patent leather belt to match my shoes.

By the way, my toes were just about numb in these shoes.  I keep meaning to take them to the shop to have them stretched, but I think I’m just going to bite the bullet and buy myself one of these:

Two Way Shoe Stretcher

It’s a two-way shoe stretcher, and I’m sure I can put it to good use.

When: Monday, June 10th, 2010

Where: Work + Dentist

What: Dress ($40 Banana Republic), blazer (Old Navy), canvas tote ($14.99 J. Crew), Shoes ($45 Banana Republic)

This outfit is a testament to the power of shopping the clearance rack.  There is no shame in my game when it comes to a good bargain.  I’d been eyeing this dress for a while last year, but I just had a feeling it would eventually go on sale.  My patience paid off during a weekend excursion to Boston when I scooped it up for more than half off.  I also lucked out with the shoes.  They have a 4-inch heel, but they are sooooo comfy.  I also get tons of compliments whenever I wear them.  At least 4 women stopped me on the street on my way to the dentist that afternoon to tell me how cute they were!

Speaking of the dentist…

I may look chipper in this photo, but I was actually in a lot of pain.  It was supposed to be a quick checkup and replacement of a small filling.  My dentist told me I didn’t even need novocaine. Unfortunately, I have a very feisty first molar who refused to take the filling after the 1st three attempts. Can we say “ouch!”

The good news is that I survived and lived to blog about it.
