Closet Confection: In Case You Haven’t Noticed…

wrap dress, black opaque tights, DKNY shoes, whistle necklace, tassle necklace, ebay vintage necklace

When: Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Where: Work

What: Dress (I’d rather not say), tights (Hue), shoes (DKNY via Loehmann’s), whistle & tassle necklaces (vintage via eBay), pendant necklace (H&M)

In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been writing the date as 2010 in all of my outfit posts this year until today.  Man, I can’t believe none of you caught that.  You guys must be slipping.

Do you see what I just did there?  Totally flipped the script and made it seem like it was your fault that I don’t know what year it is.  I’m a sneaky little one, aren’t I?

I woke up feeling a little uninspired this morning, so I just reached into my closet and grabbed the first thing I could find and paired it with black tights and black shoes.  And since I had an extra few seconds to spare before dashing out the door (a rare occurrence), I grabbed a handful of necklaces on the way out.  My friends often comment that I always look put together, but it’s actually just a carefully crafted illusion.  While I love to play dress-up in my spare time, I absolutely hate throwing together an outfit when I’m pressed for time.  Over the years, I’ve tried to make my closet as idiot-proof as possible by carefully curating a collection of flattering dresses and fabulous shoes.

If I needed to, I could probably reach into my closet blindfolded and pull out a cute outfit.  I don’t say this to brag about how awesome my clothes are, but more so to highlight the fact that dressing well doesn’t have to require that much effort.  Just careful planning and wise purchasing decisions.

And what about you guys?  What are your go-to items when you’re pressed for time, but still want to look good?

Closet Confection: Traffic Stopping

vintage plaid wool dress, navy gap cardigan, red tights, red patent leather maryjanes

When: Sunday, January 9th, 2010

Where: Brunch @ Rue 57

What: Dress ($15 No Relation Vintage), sweater ($15 Gap), belt (hand-me-down), tights ($4 Tommy Hilfiger), shoes (Jessica Simpson via DSW), glasses (Forever 21)

Thanks everyone for all of the get well wishes from yesterday’s post.  I’m feeling a lot better now, and my cold is pretty much gone at this point.  I even went to the gym after work today!

Oh, did I ever tell you guys about the time I accidentally walked into the men’s locker room?  It took my brain a good 5 seconds to process what my eyes were seeing and I was SO MORTIFIED afterward.  I kept looking over my shoulder every 2 minutes during my workout, expecting one of the club managers to tap me on the shoulder and ask me to leave for being a peeping Thomasina.  But I digress…

After being cooped up in the apartment for so long, I felt like being a little kooky on Sunday.  I’ve had these patent leather maryjanes for years, but they never seem to get much play in my wardrobe.  After dusting them off (literally), I decided to really make them stand out by pairing them with my new cherry red tights.  There’s nothing like a bright splash of color to help lift your spirits!

The wool dress I’m wearing actually falls just below my knees and is pretty sleek and ladylike on its own.   I was planning to hem it to right above my knee for a more professional look, but first I decided to make a quickie temporary hem using iron-on transfer tape and wear it as a mini for the weekend.  That stuff is awesome, so stay tuned for a tutorial on adjusting hemlines for the sewing impaired.

Closet Confection: Eighties Baby

vintage 80s sweater, black corduroys, chanel slingback pumps

When: Originally worn on Friday, January 7th, 2010 (but the pics were taken on Sunday, the 9th)

Where: Work (for like 30 minutes before I got super sick and had to go back home)

What: sweater ($10 No Relation Vintage), corduroys ($20 Uniqlo), belt ($20 Michael Kors via TJ Maxx), shoes (Chanel via eBay), sunglasses (Forever 21), necklace (H&M)

After spending 2 days at home in bed with the flu, I got cabin fever and decided to venture into the office last Friday. Big mistake! I was really in no shape to leave the house. But being the stubborn woman that I am, I decided to give it a go anyway.  Interspersed within today’s outfit pics is a play-by-play of how my morning went.

  • 6:15am  My alarm clock goes off, and I wake up to find that I’m dripping in sweat even though the bedroom is a comfortable 70 degrees.
  • 6:30am  Still groggy from the NyQuil I took the night before, I finally manage to stumble out of bed to get showered and ready.
  • 7:15am  I lamely attempt to apply makeup to coverup a red, chafed nose and dark under-eye circles.  After deciding I look even worse, I proceed to wash off the makeup and just go au naturel
  • 7:25am  I should really leave now to catch the 7:30 bus, but I can’t find my keys.

  • 7:32am  I still can’t find my keys, and I look outside my window just in time to catch a glimpse of the 7:30 bus pulling away.
  • 7:38am  With no keys in sight, I decide to leave without them and hopefully catch the 7:40 bus.  Only after the door clicks shut behind me, do I realize that my wallet is inside the apartment.
  • 7:39am  In denial that this could really be happening, I dump all of the contents of my purse onto the hallway floor and frantically dig through them, hoping to find my wallet.
  • 7:41am  Slightly dizzy from sinus pressure, I give up and resign myself to the fact that I will have to survive on $3 all day. I also cry a little inside.

  • 7:42am  I get outside just in time to see the 7:40 bus pull off.  I mumble a few not-so-ladylike phrases under my breath and struggle to breathe out of one nostril.
  • 7:50am  I get on the super duper late bus.
  • 7:52am  The woman next to me moves to another seat, but not before giving me a dirty look as I sneeze uncontrollably.
  • 7:56am  I get to the subway station and pray that by some miracle I can actually get a seat on the train…

  • 7:59am  The train arrives, and the only open seat is next to a homeless man.  I decide he needs his space and attempt to sleep while standing.
  • 8:45am  I arrive at work 15 minutes late with a purse full of used tissues.
  • 9:35am  After sneezing my way through our morning meeting, my head is pounding and my co-workers are keeping their distance from me like I have the plague.  I can’t really blame them, so I decide to just go home and beg my doorman to let me into my apartment without charging me the $20 lock-out fee.
  • 11:00am  I am back in bed… where I should have stayed in the first place.
