Last week, the temps surpassed 60 degrees… in January… in New York City!

I’m just going to let the gravity of that fact sink in with you while I describe today’s outfit.  I originally didn’t think I’d get to don this playfully spotted frock until spring, but I took advantage of the winter “heat wave” to take it out for a spin.  A nubby little mohair sweater plus bright red shoes and matching lips were just the right finishing touches to help put some extra pep in my step!

Last Thursday’s outfit left me wanting to play with more jewel tones, so I nabbed this beautiful scarf and decided to build an entire outfit around it.  Scarves are a great way to jazz up an otherwise standard ensemble, and I especially love how they can inspire unexpected color combinations.  For instance, I’ve had this sweater and this skirt for quite some time but never thought to pair them together before.  You can rest assured that I’ll be digging through my scarf drawer over the coming weeks to see what other combinations I can come up with.

It seems like the nastier the weather gets, the brighter my outfits become.  The last time I wore this skirt, it was a downright balmy 60s degrees.  This time around it’s about 30 degrees cooler and there’s a layer of gray slush on the ground.  I know I threaten to move to Florida every year around this time, but it’s starting to sound more and more attractive.

Back when over-the-knee boots were all the rage, I was intrigued but not really sure if they were practical for me.  So I scooped up a cheap-y pair at Forever 21 (for under $30, thank you very much) just to test the waters.  My instincts were correct, in that I’ve only worn them a handful of times.  I decided to give them another go yesterday, and I really like the way they work with this midi-length skirt.
