When: Saturday, July 27th, 2010

Where: Central Park + window shopping on 5th Avenue

What: Hat (Esprit), dress (Forever 21), shoes (Kenneth Cole), handbag ($10 H&M)

I’ve had this hat for a couple of years now but hadn’t worn it recently until I saw Bill Cunningham’s recent On the Street video (btw, if you’ve never seen his videos for the New York Times, you should totally check them out).

The hat was a last minute addition after I had already styled my hair in a sideswept bun, so that’s why it’s perched atop my head like that.  I was way too lazy to redo the bun, and I thought it looked kind of cool this way.

In other breaking news, the strap broke on my favorite pair of sandals as I was leaving Central Park.  Af first I panicked because we were pretty deep in the park, and I wasn’t sure how I was going to make it out with just one shoe.  Furthermore, it was 8pm on a Saturday, and most of the shops on 5th Avenue close up early.  And finally, I just couldn’t see myself strolling into Bottega Veneta or Barney’s (wearing one shoe no less!) and paying a couple hundred dollars for a pair of flip-flops.

Luckily, I found a random piece of string in my purse and was able to jerry-rig a passable solution that at least got me to the nearest GAP where I picked up a pair of bright red Keds.

Sneakers aren’t my usual style, but I may be a convert. I am definitely going to try and work these puppies into a few more outfits.

Closet Confection: The Cold Shoulder

When: Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Where: Chillin’ in Union Square

What: Dress (Forever 21), sandals ($50 Michael Kors via Loehmann’s)

This has been one of the hottest summers I’ve spent in the city.  I’ve finally given up trying to fight it, and I just roll with whatever temperatures come my way by wearing tons of breezy little dresses like this one.

I really love the look of one-shoulder dresses, but they can be tricky to pull off for the well-endowed.  If you don’t get the right fit (and wear the proper support), you can easily look lopsided… and that kinda kills the whole greek goddess vibe you were trying to convey.

When that happens, there are two tricks to keep up your sleeve (or should I say under your shirt).  One is to wear one of those bustier-type contraptions that provide way more support than a regular strapless bra.  Wanna go more minimalist? Try one of those convertable bras with the clear plastic straps (they’re better at staying in place than cotton or satin).  You can arrange them every which way, including just using one strap and crossing it to the opposite side in the back which is perfect for one-shoulder dresses like this.

As I said in my About Me page, there have been way too many advances in undergarment technology for the “ladies” to ever go out not looking their best!

Closet Confection: A Short Story

When: Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Where: On the way to brunch at Community Food & Juice

What: Tee (Forever 21), shorts (H&M), sandals (Michael Kors), bracelets (Forever 21)

For the second time this season (which is a lot for me), I decided to don a pair of shorts.  To jazz things up a bit, I had to add in an embellished tee.  Unfortunately I forgot to snap a rear view pic, because this one has a ribbon that ties in a really cute bow at the neck.

I originally had on a pair of platform wedges to help elongate my legs, but as I was leaving the house I thought it looked a little too high maintenance so I slipped into a pair of sandals instead.  I was so glad I did, because we wound up doing a lot of walking that morning!
