The weather has really thrown me for a loop lately. One day it’s a sweltering 95 degrees, and the next it’s 60 degrees and rainy.  In fact, I was actually holding an umbrella when I first starting taking these photos, but was promptly able to put it away in the middle of the shoot.

In other news, I purchased a new toy last week that I’m really excited about.  Not sure if you’ve noticed a difference in picture quality this week, but after much consternation, I finally bit the bullet and bought a new lens for my camera!  Out of necessity in trying to keep my blog all nice and pretty for you guys, I’ve been slowly but surely educating myself about photography and upgrading my equipment over time.  I’ve wanted to try out a fixed lens for a while and finally decided on a Sony 50mm f/1.8 SAM DT.

So far, I’m really pleased with it.  It does a much better job in low-light situations (i.e. snapping pics after work when the sun’s just about GONE) than the kit lens I was using.  What I like most is the control it gives me over depth of field in my photos.  Previously, I often  felt like I had to take my outfit pics in front of a brick wall or some other banal surface.  Otherwise, the background would look to busy and compete with the details in my ensemble.  But now I can snap away to my heart’s content in a variety of locales without having to worry so much about capturing random strangers or other out-of-place bits in the background!

Recently, Eric and I headed up to Poughkeepsie for a fall harvest bus tour.  We ate cheese, picked apples, drank wine, and just had a plain ol’ good time!  Since I don’t own any overalls, I went with my version of a rustic look.  I felt cute and comfy throughout the day, but I kinda wished I had remembered to wear my wellies instead of these boots.  Oh well, I’ll definitely remember next year because I have a feeling this little excursion will turn into an annual event.

CC Recommends: Hipstamatic!

Completely random, but I just wanted to tell you guys about my favorite iPhone app to date: Hipstamatic!  The name kinda threw me off (give me 5th Avenue over Williamsburg any day), but I have been playing with this little guy ever since I downloaded it a while back.  With little-to-no additional effort, suddenly life seems way more interesting.

For instance…

…the view from an alley after dinner at the local dive spot takes on a totally epic NYC feel

photoaa3

…New York’s finest look less like donut-inhalers and more like those bada$$ cops you see in the movies

photoaa5

…my special guy suddenly looks like a mysterious stranger plotting out his course in life

…and heck, even my quick train ride upstate on the Metro North takes on a romantic feel.

My only qualm with the software is that it takes super looooong for photos to process in-between takes.  I also have yet to try out all the different lens/flash options, so these were all mostly taken with the John S lens and Dreampop flash.  Since I don’t really know what I’m doing, the results are a little unpredictable, but that’s half the fun.  If you’re like me and want the ability to take bangin’ photos without lugging around a huge camera (or doing heavy-duty editing after the fact), then I highly recommend this app.

Do any of you guys use Hipstamatic?  Got any other app recommendations I should know about?
