Candy Stripes {Zara Striped Blanket Scarf + Gap Sweatshirt Dress}

What’s not to love about a huge cozy blanket scarf?! For the past year or two, plaid versions were all the rage. But this time around, the trend feels fresh and new in bold candy-coated stripes. I scooped this one up at Zara recently, and I’m thinking of adding another one to my collection. What new twists on familiar favorites are you trying out this season?

Sweet Little Nothings {October Favorites}

I’ts been ages since I’ve done one of these, but I just wanted to share a quick rooundup of all the things that made me smile during the month of Otcober. Enjoy!

blue-yellow-faux-fur-stole-2

This awesomely tacky faux fur wrap from Zara. It’s a slight departure from my normal style, but saw it as I was leaving the store and couldn’t resist rushing back to the cash register to bring it home with me.

exploring-washington-heights-3

Exploring my new neighborhood in Washington Heights. Eric and I lived her for a couple of years when we first got married, but we moved back last month after being away for 7 years! We’ve fallen in love with it all over again and continue to discover new things almost every day.

There’s nothing I love more this time of year than curling up with a good book and a mug of hot cocoa. It’s like PopSugar Must Have read my mind when they sent me this month’s #MustHaveBox to try. And because sharing is caring, here’s $5 off your FIRST Must Have Box with code SHOP5. http://bit.ly/psmusthave1116

Fall Foliage in Upstate New York

Watching the leaves turn this time of year is always a treat. I’m still bummed I missed out on apple picking this season, but this stunning view in Upstate New York more than made up for it.

And last, but defnitely not least… I celebrated my birthday this month! We kept things pretty low-key this year, but I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Per Se with a cozy table for two overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park. And afterwards, we went to the Metropolitan Opera to watch Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

GIVEAWAY ALERT: Alice Through the Looking Glass

alice-brooks-brothers-red-fleece-dress-2{Brooks Brother Red Fleece Dress (ON SALE!), Ralph Lauren Military Jacket, Dooney & Bourke Crossbody Bag, Zara Heels}

If you’ve been following along on the ‘gram, then you know that last week I had the pleasure of attending a truly amazing event: A mad-hatter themed tea party at the Lambs’ Club that included a roudtable interview with award-winning costume designer, Colleen Atwood. If you haven’t seen Alice Through the Looking Glass yet, then you definitely need to get on it (and I’ve got a special giveaway to help you out). The film picks up 6 years after our heroine’s first adventure, and I took my outfit queues from the opening scene which features Alice commanding her own ship while wearing a sharp captain’s military coat.

For the past 20 years Colleen Atwood’s work has blazed across the big screen in a number of films, including Alice in Wonderland, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Beloved, Edward Scissor Hands, The Silence of the Lambs, Snow White and the Huntsman, and many more.

One of the most interesting things I learned during our talk was that she got her start in costume design much later in life – after having child and working in several other jobs. Originally, she wanted to become an artist, but had to sacrifice her dream for a more stable career in order to support her daughter on her own. Once her daughter was in college, Colleen set off for NYC with $500 in her pockets and along the way discovered her passion and innate talent for costume design.

Talk about an incredible story! Hearing her journey reminded me how we only seem to ask children what they want to be when they grow up. However, the growing process doesn’t stop once you become an adult, and it’s never too late to discover what your true passion is in life and to become wildly successful at it.
