Closet Confection: Apple Pickin'

2010_1023_outfit1

When: Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

Where: Maskers Orchard in Warwick, NY

What: Dress (H&M), jacket ($35 H&M), scarf ($32 Missoni via eBay), sunglasses (Moschino via Loehmann’s) boots (Steve Madden), tights ($10 Oroblu via Century 21)

For me, nothing helps usher in the fall like apple picking.  I’m originally from Michigan where apple picking is a must every fall.  Unfortunately, my husband is from Florida and doesn’t really get the whole fall harvest thing.  Last year, we made the awful mistake of going to Queens County Farm where it was too crowded to really enjoy ourselves.  I guess I should have known better than to trust a farm in New York City.

This year, we decided to hop on the bus and head to a real orchard.

The scenery alone made the two-hour trip worthwhile, although I quickly realized that sitting on a bale of hey while wearing a sweater dress probably wasn’t the best idea…

…unless having a bunch of it stuck to your backside is your thing.  It turned out not to be such a great look for me.

While the city does offer some great backdrops for outfit posts, sometimes you just can’t beat the awesome setting mother nature provides.  I admit, I sometimes get jealous of other fashion bloggers who take those amazing photos where they’re either frolicking in a forest or lazily watching the sunset over an arid field.

Well here’s my turn…

Overall, we had a really great time eating donuts and sipping hot apple cider.  Now I have a bag of apples in the fridge that are just waiting to be baked into a pie.  Know any good apple recipes you’d like to share?  Drop me a note.

Closet Confection: Designer on a Dime

2010_1011_outfit1

When: Monday, October 11th, 2010

Where: Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum

What: Blazer ($20 Dolce & Gabbbana via eBay), embellished tee ($20 J. Crew), jeans (Forever 21), shoes ($20 Guess via Filene’s Basement), clutch ($20 Marc Jacobs), shades ($35 Marc Jacobs via Nordstrom’s Rack)

While, I’m perfectly happy purchasing clothing from Forever 21 and H&M, I do appreciate designer duds.  However, there’s just one problem…

I’m CHEAP!

2010_1011_outfit2

Ok, ok… that’s not entirely true. The truth is that I used to be cheap (especially back in college), but now I consider myself to be frugal:

Frugality is the practice of acquiring goods and services in a restrained manner, and resourcefully using already owned economic goods and services, to achieve a longer term goal.

Yeah, I think that about sums it up.

2010_1011_outfit3

I’ve always loved shopping and the thrill of the hunt, but I hate the idea of spending more money than I have to. When I was younger, that translated into me buying horrible PVC boots that fell apart and acrylic sweaters that stretched out and pilled.

I was a hot mess, but I could get away with it at the time because I was still in school. But now that I’m a young, corporate-ladder climbing, upwardly mobile-type, career lady, I need to dress the part… even when I’m off-duty.

The good news is that buying higher-quality items doesn’t actually cost me that much more.  Because in truth, I was buying a lot of crap in large quantities previously.

I admit, I probably do still purchase in higher than necessary quantities (and heck, I’ll even agree that some crap does still manage to sneak into my wardobe every now and then, e.g. sequins leggings from Strawberry).

I was pretty psyched when I lucked out and won this blazer on eBay.  But I was even more stoked when I saw the exact same item at Century 21 (a discount retailer) for $200 just a few days later. That’s a 90% savings (not even factoring in the original price)!

Closet Confection: Remember the Hamburglar?

2010_1007_outfit1

When: Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Where: Work

What: Dress ($40 Rock.Paper.Vintage), tights (H&M), velvet blazer (Banana Republic clearance sale), shoes (90% off at Kenneth Cole)

I knew this dress reminded me of something, but I just couldn’t put my finger on it…

Then it came to me!  —>

In my defense, I did not… I repeat, I did not steal any hamburgers yesterday.

2010_1007_outfit2

These shoes, on the other hand, were quite a steal.  Some of my readers have commented on my extensive shoe collection.  And it’s true, I do have quite a few pairs.  But I don’t want you guys to think go around frittering all my money away on shoes.

Au contraire…

2010_1007_outfit3

The truth is, I’m a magnet for shoe sales.  They magically seek me out. And I’m not talking about talking about some hansy-pansy 15% off “sale” or a BOGO promotion at Payless.  I’m talking steep price drops on quality merchandise.  Whenever one creeps up, I pounce!

About 2 years ago, I was innocently walking back to my office during my lunch break when I stumbled across a Kenneth Cole store closing.  All of their clearance merchandise was an additional 80% OFF!  To make a long story short, I walked hobbled out of the store with more than $2000 worth of shoes (3 pairs of boots, 2 pairs of pumps, and 1 pair of sandals) for around $200.  I was so laden down with bags that one of the store clerks had to help me catch a cab to drive the 3 blocks back to my office.

What can I say?  They made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.
