Closet Confection: Two Times the Fun

rugby letterman sweater, club monaco sailor skirt, cableknit tights, brown booties, crochet scarf

When: Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Where: Work

What: Cardigan ($40 Rugby + $10 for custom lettering), skirt ($40 Club Monaco), tights (Steve Madden via Century 21), shoes (BCBG via Loehmann’s), scarf (self-made)

A few of you have asked me where I get my outfit ideas.  And the answer is that they typically come through a lot of experimentation, but I’m not ashamed to admit that this particular ensemble was totally ripped off from one of my current favorite personal style blogs: Another Day to Dress Up!  Her site is the bee’s knees, and I love it because we seem to have a lot of similar pieces, but she puts them together in a completely different way than I would.  When I saw her 1970s School Girl look, I flat out knew I’d have to replicate it with my own spin.

Oh, and did you get a good look at my new scarf:

I made it myself!  Although I think I got a little carried away because it’s super long, but the best part is that it only took me 2 days.  As you may recall, I took up knitting during the last 30 for 30 challenge to help alleviate some of my shopping withdrawal.  Well, that eventually led to loom knitting, which also led to me teaching myself how to crochet as well.  Guys, I have been up to my ears in yarn for the past 2.5 months!  Thanks to the awesome video tutorials at Lion Brand, I’ve also recently crocheted a tube scarf and matching turban (pics coming soon), and I’m just about done with a coordinating hat for the scarf you see here.

It’s hard to believe that I initially started this blog last April because my husband thought I needed a hobby… other than shopping.  Between blogging, photography, knitting/crocheting (plus shopping, in moderation of course), I think I’ve got enough new hobbies to keep me occupied for quite some time!

And what about you guys?  Do any of you have any interesting hobbies that you’d like to share?  I love hearing about the interesting ways that people spend their free time.

That scarf is AMAZING!! I wish I could knit like that (or at all). I would have a scarf like that in ever yarn color available.

Wow to the nth power! You taught yourself how to knit just a few months ago and made that scarf? Talented! Such fun confetti tights!

Love this outfit on you. I don’t know her blog, I’ll check it out.

Great scarf. I also am crocheting like crazy lately…my obsession is “scarflaces” (somewhere between a scarf and necklace).

Guess it is a good way to get over the shopping ban!

    • ClosetConfections February 3, 2011 at 1:52 am

Scarflaces are great! I have at least 6, and I get tons of wear out of them. I really like the wide ones that you can wear as a hood.

Love the scarf! I’ve also been a knitting fool this winter – I find that the things I make are better than the store!! What type of yarn did you use here? I love the texture!

  • laniza February 2, 2011 at 2:58 pm

What a gorgeous scarf! My main hobby is belly-dancing–not only is it fun, but it’s great exercise, too! 🙂

  • Angie February 2, 2011 at 7:43 pm

you really baked something up this time! Those tights are making me crave funfetti cake (the yummy white cake with sprinkles scattered throughout the cake that lots of us grew up on). yum! Do these tights have a specific name? How long ago did you purchase them? Thanks

    • ClosetConfections February 3, 2011 at 1:48 am

Omigosh, these do remind me of funfetti cake! I purchased them last year at a discount store which means they were probably from a few seasons back, and I have no idea what the name was. Sorry! I’ll keep my eyes peeled for something similar.

You look amazing. I love that you took up knitting- so did I! Love how a bright scarf can make a whole outfit just jump with excitement. (Can’t wait til you remix that skirt, too… love it!)

  • Robin Louise February 2, 2011 at 5:27 pm

I love the dijon colored scarf! I’ll be checking back for the matching scarf and turban, because I need some serious turban inspiration (I just gave myself a terrible haircut, and now is a great time to experiment with turbans), and I also need crochet inspiration. I am headed out pretty soon to go to a knitting group at the library with my mom! I am so pleased to have stumbled upon your blog. What good timing!

How fun are those tights! this is just too stinking cute. I love it!’

ummm, are you planning on selling any of your yarn-y goods? starting an Etsy shop, perhaps? That scarf is gorgeous, dahling!

    • ClosetConfections February 3, 2011 at 1:41 am

Thanks! Can you believe they’ve been sitting in my drawer unworn since since last year?! And yes, I have thought about an Etsy shop. Someday, when I have enough time to sit down and plan out the logistics.

      • Anonymous February 3, 2011 at 8:16 pm

I’ll be looking forward to that Etsy Shop! 🙂

  • ClosetConfections February 3, 2011 at 1:42 am

I’m glad you stumbled upon my blog too! Ugh, there’s nothing worse than waiting for a bad haircut to grow out. Good luck!
