Closet Confection: Traffic Stopping

vintage plaid wool dress, navy gap cardigan, red tights, red patent leather maryjanes

When: Sunday, January 9th, 2010

Where: Brunch @ Rue 57

What: Dress ($15 No Relation Vintage), sweater ($15 Gap), belt (hand-me-down), tights ($4 Tommy Hilfiger), shoes (Jessica Simpson via DSW), glasses (Forever 21)

Thanks everyone for all of the get well wishes from yesterday’s post.  I’m feeling a lot better now, and my cold is pretty much gone at this point.  I even went to the gym after work today!

Oh, did I ever tell you guys about the time I accidentally walked into the men’s locker room?  It took my brain a good 5 seconds to process what my eyes were seeing and I was SO MORTIFIED afterward.  I kept looking over my shoulder every 2 minutes during my workout, expecting one of the club managers to tap me on the shoulder and ask me to leave for being a peeping Thomasina.  But I digress…

After being cooped up in the apartment for so long, I felt like being a little kooky on Sunday.  I’ve had these patent leather maryjanes for years, but they never seem to get much play in my wardrobe.  After dusting them off (literally), I decided to really make them stand out by pairing them with my new cherry red tights.  There’s nothing like a bright splash of color to help lift your spirits!

The wool dress I’m wearing actually falls just below my knees and is pretty sleek and ladylike on its own.   I was planning to hem it to right above my knee for a more professional look, but first I decided to make a quickie temporary hem using iron-on transfer tape and wear it as a mini for the weekend.  That stuff is awesome, so stay tuned for a tutorial on adjusting hemlines for the sewing impaired.

Those shoes are to DIE for! I keep seeing people wearing Jessica Simpson’s shoes, I must try on a pair!

JS shoes are the bomb! I have another pair just like these in black, and they’ve both lasted for going on 4 years now. I hear her company is projected to do over $1B in sales next year!

Love that plaid dress! I would be hesitant to draw attention to my legs with red tights, but you can really pull off bold looks like these! Lookin’ good.

    • ClosetConfections January 11, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Thanks! I almost forgot I was wearing them until I noticed a few people staring at my legs, lol.

Aaaah! I can’t believe those shoes! They are perfect with the exactly matching tights. Way too much fun.

And I’m excited for your hemming tutorial b/c I could totally use that!

Oh my, love this outfit! Love how you pulled the red from the dress into your tights and shoes. And those shoes are absolutely adorable!

You seem to have an endless tights collection (*a bit jealous*)!!!
And I loove the red shoes with the red tights, your legs look super long this way! And ahh, the dress: I’d steal it right now, hehe!

Love the monochromatic look of a solid tight and shoe combo. And these red ones are simply awesome. For those who loves tights, they are available in every color and size from We Love Color.

There’s no place like home! That’s exactly what I thought when I saw those shoes – which is a total compliment, it’s my FAVORITE movie.

I’m totally impressed how you were able to take this plaid dress and red tights and somehow make it feel sophisticated when it so easily could have felt juvenile. Kudos!

PLEASE post about the tape. My mom just taught me to hem, and um…it didn’t go so well. Love the tights/shoes combo, too!

Golly GEee!!! I am infatuated with this!! I just think it’s completely wonderful..I didn’t know it was possible to do so much red with so much ease and class. And I love how you have the belt tied…Just everything about this outfit is AWESOME!

    • ClosetConfections January 12, 2011 at 1:53 am

Yay! I’m glad you like it. Red is my favorite color, but I don’t wear it nearly often enough.

  • ClosetConfections January 12, 2011 at 1:57 am

Thanks for the tip! I’ve seen other bloggers wearing them, but I’ve never purchased anything myself. Most of my tights are impulse buys when I’m out and about, but I will definitely check out their site.

    Glad you’re feeling better!

ooooo LOVE that dress! It is so festive for the winter! Nice choice to hem, as well: it is exactly the perfect length. I can see hints of the collar, too – it seems to have beautiful structure. And, I like how your tights and leggings are seemingly one. What a fun twist!

  • Jen HaHA January 12, 2011 at 1:42 pm

I like your plaid/tartan dress. And, that red is marvelous! I’ve always loved Mary Janes. Red patent ones? Demure yet sassy!

Me too! I gotta admit, coloured tights it’s so hard for me to wear. I tend to go matchy=matchy which I willl hopefully be cured of soon!

Pairing the red shoes with the red tights is gorgeous and makes your legs look a mile long. Did you photoshop in the little twinkle on the shoe?—too perfect!

I’ve walked into men’s bathrooms before, and it took me a minute to figure out what I did, too. The worst, though, was once I was walking out of the women’s locker room at the gym and a woman walking in stopped abruptly and asked, “Is this the women’s locker room?” Needless to say, I did not feel very feminine that day!

    • ClosetConfections January 16, 2011 at 1:36 am

I actually didn’t photoshop the twinkle. It was just really sunny that day 🙂
