In case you missed the memo, apparently turbans are all the rage right now… at least according to the New York Times.
To be honest, when I first noticed the trend I was surprised. For years, I’ve been tying my hair up in a similar fashion (always with a silk scarf) before I go to bed or when I’m doing chores around the house. It just never occurred to me to make it a fashion statement and actually wear it out in public.
Then I found this awesome ear warmer/headband at H&M and was immediately sold. However, a “certain member” of my household still needed convincing.
The first time I wore it, the ensuing conversation went a little something like this:
Him: Who are you?
Me: What do you mean?
Him: You look like a gypsy. What is this?
Me: That’s no way to get your 3 wishes…
Him: Hmmm… I guess you’re right.
I’m not worried. I think it adds a touch of old-school glamour to my ensembles, and it’ll grow on him eventually.
On a side note, the most random thing happened while taking pictures this afternoon. I was at my usual, somewhat-secluded, blocked off side street trying to discreetly take photos of myself when THREE CONVERTIBLE FERRARIS decide to pull up and gun their engines right alongside me! I’m not sure where they thought they were going since the street is closed to traffic, but they of course drew a small crowd of onlookers while I was standing there posing for the camera.
If ever there was a time for me to get over my shyness about taking my own photos in public, that was it! In any case, the driver in the red car was kind enough to ask if he was ruining my shot and then politely offered to back up a few feet.
Do any of you have any weird or interesting stories about things that happened while taking outfit photos out in public? If so, please share ‘cuz I’d love to hear them!

The mix of textures in that outfit is great for fall–the silk skirt, soft wool sweater, patterned tights, wooly headband. Love it! And you should wear that color gold often–it’s great with your skin tone.
Thanks, I really don’t wear this color often enough.
Great skirt! I love the color and the pleats and bows!
That’s funny (and sweet) that the drivers were concerned about whether they were interfering with your photos.
The headband looks great on you! I need something to keep my ears warm on my commute, but I’m often a bit too warm in the morning to wear a full hat. I may make a trip to H&M to look for this.
I can’t get over how awesome this outfit is: It’s work-appropriate but at the same time so fun. The gold skirt looks gorgeous on you and really complements your skin tone. Also, you rock that headband/turban! It’s a trend I didn’t think would work on anyone but runway folk, but it looks great on you.
Thanks! I think the fact that this is a headband and not a full on turban makes it a little more wearable.
So stunning! Seriously, this is just gorgeous, with the gold and the black, and that turban adds some serious draaaama! I love that turbans are “back”, though, I must confess, I’ve been rocking them since I was a wee thing. Nothing says balls out glamour like a girl in a turban. I was psyched to see The Glamourai do a turban tutorial, and then I had to laugh when the NYT came out!
I totally missed the memo, but I think turbans are really cool! I’ve seen them on What I Wore and a few other blogs but never tried wearing one. The gold skirt really stands out in the outfit, is it new? I don’t remember seeing it before but I love it, the pleats are so luxe looking!
Yes, the skirt is new. I had a 40% off coupon from the Gap that was burning a hole in my pocket right before the challenge started, lol. I think it’s one of my favorite items now.
I just got those coupons… but I’m on the 30 for 30 shopping ban, oh no! Also this just came up on my bloglovin: http://olsensanonymous.blogspot.com/2010/11/close-up-mary-kate.html Another turban! I know you usually wear your hair pulled back but I think letting it down could look cool!
Thanks for sharing that pic! I’ll have to give that a try next time I wear my hair down.
That is so funny! You should have asked if you could pose with the car! 🙂
You totally rock the turban. It looks really good with the dressy outfit!
That skirt looks so luxurious. I love the contrast between that and the tights.
Have a great weekend!
Believe me, I thought about it!
I love that the gold and brooch compliment the architectural details of the building behind you.
I always take my pictures outside around the neighborhood and I hate it! People are always looking. I’m sure they don’t really care, but I always feel so self-conscious. I love that the driver actually accommodated you!
And yes, tell your man that you look glamourous!
The Auspicious Life
I know, right! It was a complete coincidence that my outfit matched. I’m finding that if I stare right back at people, they usually turn away, lol.
i am so happy to see that you didn’t change your outfit base on your boyfriend’s judgment. i tried to rock some little ankle socks that seem to be all the rage these days, but the BF vetoed it, and i listened. damnit.
Yeah, I’ve learned that sometimes I have to just go with my gut rather than trust my husband’s opinion on more “fashion-forward” pieces. Especially since he’s a pretty conservative/preppy dresser. I hope you decided to give the ankle socks a go!
That is such a chic and glamorous outfit! I think my coworkers would pass out if I wore that to the agency! Loving that skirt and the gorgeous hose. PS: I cannot WAIT to accidentally stumble on you taking your pictures because we work in the same area.
Cool, we should do lunch some time! And that would be hilarious if you did happen to catch me during one of my photo shoots.
I just stumbled on your blog and I’m loving it. I can’t wait to read more!!!
Awesome, thanks for stopping by!
I love the yellow skirt paired with more gothic looking tights. What an awesome combination!

Thanks! I love how these tights give the outfit some edge.
I love the skirt and tights! They are the perfect amount of color and texture! And the turban really works on you, NY Times vote or not. He’ll warm up to it. I’ve pretty much learned that if ‘boy’ thinks a certain article is a little weird that probably means it is just the right amount of fashion forward 🙂
You know what, you’re probably right lol!
i love the outfit!! and the headband–it does add instant glamor 🙂 combined, it makes for a delightfully funky and chic look! i’m looking forward to seeing your remixes 🙂
I’ve never had anything happen while I was taking outfit photos, but I took my brother’s senior pictures and we had cars honk at us. Granted, he was on-top of a giant stone pylon at the entrance to the public park so, you know.
I love the turban. I think you have to have a beautiful face to pull that off, which you obviously do. I would look so strange. I reminds me of the 40s. Put it with a big coat and some awesome gloves and you have 40s movie glamor. It’s just lovely. Love the outfit. Especially the skirt 🙂
Thanks so much! And you’re right about the 40s glamour. Chic gloves are definitely on my list of purchases once this challenge is over.
aaaaw … the skirt is too cute 🙂

I LOVE the polka dot blouse coming out of the sweater, so adorable!!!
Aren’t husbands funny when you wear something different?
I love the gold skirt – it looks like you can easily dress it up or down, depending on your mood.
I love that skirt!
hahah nice! Funny about the ferraris. I absolutely ADORE this outfit. Everything is so well put together – you look great! That skirt is amazing. Photo number three was tripping me out for a hot second though…the gold decoration on the railing looks like it’s a headpiece or something. Guess you caught it on just the right angle, heheheh.
PS did I say this already? those lace fishnets with the gold skirt is a hot look. Well done, lady!
Thanks! It was a sheer stroke of luck that the backdrop matched my outfit so perfectly. And yeah, that would be one crazy headpiece, lol!
I love, love, love that skirt! I should have bought it when I saw it at Gap the other day!
I passed it up at first, but then I saw it on the cover of Nylon Magazine and took it as a sign, lol!
i’m trying to catch up on all my remixers and i saw you’re wearing the skirt i’ve been so curious about! it looks great on you, i hope it’s still available after the challenge is over!
I’m sure it will be… maybe it’ll even be on sale!
LOVE your skirt! That is such a gorgeous colour. Also, you look radiant in that turban. It’s a good look for you. 🙂
Thank you. The color is what immediately attracted me to this skirt.
