Closet Confection outfit of the day: Back to Basics

When: Tuesday, May 11th

Where: Work

What: Cashmere t-shirt (Express), skirt (Banana Republic), necklace (Forever21), tights (Urban Outfitters), trench (Square One), shoes (Nine West)

Today’s outfit started off pretty basic: black skirt, grey sweater, black trench.  But somehow, I just couldn’t leave the house without giving it a little more oomph.  Enter kooky tights and an adorable necklace, and Voila!, I was ready to take on the world!

As much as I love these tights, I think it’s time to retire them.  I bought them almost two years ago after I fell in love with the look from Chanel:

I lusted over these for a few weeks but common sense just wouldn’t let me spend over $200 for a pair of tights.  I certainly got my money’s worth out of these Urban Outfitter versions that were quite a steal at 2 for $20.

When: Monday, May 10th

Where: Work

What: Dress (Banana Republic), trench (H&M), shoes (Michael Kors), scarf (street vendor in Times Square)

I love so many things about this outfit, I’m not sure where to begin…

I was sort of on the fence about buying these shoes last year (couldn’t really justify the need for orange shoes), but I’m sooooo glad I did.  They just make me feel happy whenever I wear them.  And besides, I got them on clearance at Loehmann’s for like thirty bucks.

This scarf has huge sentimental value.  I purchased it the day after my husband and I got married.  It was unexpectedly windy, so I purchased it as we were leaving our hotel for brunch.  He calls it my “honeymoon scarf” and smiles every time I wear it. We also have a “honeymoon umbrella” that I’m banned from ever using because I have terrible luck with those things (they either wind up lost or broken).

The dress is also one of my favorites.  The color is great, the cut is super-flattering (you really can’t go wrong with a wrap dress) and the fabric is substantial and cozy.  I didn’t get to wear it much when I first bought it because another girl in my office already had the same one.  Luckily, we’ve both moved on to other gigs. So now I can wear it as much as I want without fear of an episode of “Who Wore It Best: Office Edition!”

Closet Confection: Tour de Force

When: Friday, May 7th

Where: Work and a night at the ballet

What: Dress ($35 H&M), black velvet blazer ($50 Banana Republic on sale), zebra print scarf ($10 street vendor),  tights (Wolford), shoes (Via Spiga via Filene’s Basement)

This dress was a recent (pre-shopping hiatus) purchase, and I thought it would be perfect for a night at the ballet.  The pale pink color and soft flowy material made me want to do an arabesque… if only I didn’t have two left feet.  Actually, my dancing’s not that bad, and I can do a pretty sweet moonwalk.

I originally planned to wear this dress with a thin gold belt and strappy sandals, but I changed my mind because the weather looked a little dreary when I woke up that morning.  I think pairing it with the black blazer and tights helped make the dress more work appropriate and also provided a nice contrast.  I threw in the zebra print scarf at the last minute for good measure.

My husband and I were feeling very cultured that evening as we headed out to the Ajkun Ballet to see Legacy, Exploring the Odyssey of Albania. Such a great performance!  After the show, we were able to meet the dancers and choreographer while we sampled Albanian cuisine.
