Quick Wardrobe Fix: TIGHTS!

One of my favorite things about fall (other than apple picking) is TIGHTS!

Sheer, opaque, ribbed, lace, dark, colorful, fishnet… you name it, I’ve gotta have it.  The reason why I love tights so much is because they’re an easy, inexpensive way to perk up any outfit.  I have a full drawer devoted exclusively to hosiery, so I thought I’d do a quick round-up of my favorites.

At a minimum, every woman should have a couple of pairs of black and dark brown opaque tights (80 den or higher) on hand.  If you’re feeling a bit more daring, here are some other combos to try:

FUNKY CABLE KNIT

Great for casual cozy looks.  Instead of the usual black or charcoal grey, this cream colored version with multicolor speckles go with a variety of sweater dresses and look super-sweet tucked into brown or tan knee-length boots.

MELLOW YELLOW

Hands-down, my favorite way to wear tights is in a bright, candy-colored hue.  I always have red, hot pink, and cobalt blue on deck, but these yellow ones are pretty cool too… especially when paired with navy blue, deep purple, or dark grey.  To keep the look chic, just make sure they aren’t too sheer.  In general, the bolder the color, the more opaque the tights should be.  If bright colors aren’t your thing, try purple, burgundy or forest green.

ANIMAL PRINT

The leopard print trend is all the rage this season, and these tights are a simple way to inject some cool into your wardrobe.  It’s amazing how these things can instantly add an element of fierceness to even the tamest of outfits, as shown here.

BLUE DIAMOND

These are a fun pair that can go either casual or dressy.  I went with a casual look here. But because of the sheerness, I think they’d look equally as chic paired with high heels and a pencil skirt.

BLACK LACE

Looking to add a little sex appeal without showing too much?  Just add a pair of black lacy tights, and you’re well own your way.  These can be worn a variety of ways, but just be careful when pairing with very short skirts… especially in the daytime.  Remember, we want to keep things classy, not trashy.

OTHER OPTIONS ON MY FALL WISHLIST:

  • Backseam – for a touch of retro glamour
  • Swiss Dots – a classic favorite that’s both polished and sweet
  • Nude Fishnet – sexy, but in a more subtle way than their black counterpart
  • Jester – for when I can’t decide on what color to wear

And what about you guys?  What are some of your favorite ways to wear tights this season?

Closet Raid: That Was Then, This Is Now

I always find it tricky getting dressed this time of year.  For instance, it’s been consistently 60 degrees for the past week, but yesterday the temperature shot up to 85.  While it seems like many of my fellow fashionistas in the blogosphere have tucked away their summer wardrobes weeks ago, I’m still not quite ready to let it all go. Below are a few pieces that I’m still keeping in rotation.  They’ve just been perked up a bit for fall.

This Banana Republic skirt kept me cool as a cucumber when I paired it with a white embellished tank.  I think it looks equally crisp and seasonally appropriate when worn with a vintage plaid boy’s shirt and peep toe booties.

Tribal prints were all the rage this summer, but this Forever 21 mini skirt still holds its own as the temperatures dip.  Just throw on black tights, a black stretchy turtleneck and black suede ankle boots.

Who says sundresses  shouldn’t see the light of day once fall hits? Not I! After shrugging into a cardigan and stepping into some calf-length boots, this Forever 21 dress keeps me strutting well into the next season.

When worn on its own with gladiator sandals this wrap dress from Banana Republic is perfect for a sultry summer evening. Presto-chango! The look is transformed with a vintage ski bunny sweater and rugged tan leather boots.

I’ll admit, this H&M dress did make me feel like a goddess when paired with gold shoes and accessories. But I’ll feel even more diva-fied as the temperatures drop with my zebra print scarf, velvet blazer and patent leather maryjanes.

Feminine * Stylish * Successful (A Matter of Personal Style)

Feminine Stylish Successful

One thing that helps me anytime I’m shopping or trying to pick out an outfit is to keep in mind the image that I want to project to the rest of the world.  Typically, this can be encapsulated in 3 words.  At my current stage in life, those 3 words are: feminine, stylish, and successful. I came up with this idea in college, and back then the words were funky, fashionable, and… Well, I forget the other one, but you get the picture!

So whenever I’m standing in front of the mirror or examining an article of clothing, I ask myself “Does this make me feel feminine, stylish, and successful?”  If the answer is no, then back on the rack it goes.  This method really helps me spend wisely when shopping.  It also helps me weed out the crap in my closet.  For instance, I took one look at myself in a pair of boyfriend jeans and knew they weren’t for me.  And while I’m often tempted by some of the cute cheap-y shoes I find in stores like Payless (and sometimes I give in), I know that I’m not going to feel particularly successful when they begin to fall apart.

This is not to say that I’m unwilling to take risks and try new things fashion-wise. Far from it!  But I will say that the bulk of my wardrobe fits into my style mantra, and I enjoy developing a signature look.  In fact, I’m all smiles when one of my friends sees me in a particular outfit and exclaims “That’s such a Kendra look!”

What about you guys?  What three words best describe your style? If you’re still trying to figure that out, which 3 words would you aspire to?
