Closet Confection: Designer on a Dime

2010_1011_outfit1

When: Monday, October 11th, 2010

Where: Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum

What: Blazer ($20 Dolce & Gabbbana via eBay), embellished tee ($20 J. Crew), jeans (Forever 21), shoes ($20 Guess via Filene’s Basement), clutch ($20 Marc Jacobs), shades ($35 Marc Jacobs via Nordstrom’s Rack)

While, I’m perfectly happy purchasing clothing from Forever 21 and H&M, I do appreciate designer duds.  However, there’s just one problem…

I’m CHEAP!

Ok, ok… that’s not entirely true. The truth is that I used to be cheap (especially back in college), but now I consider myself to be frugal:

Frugality is the practice of acquiring goods and services in a restrained manner, and resourcefully using already owned economic goods and services, to achieve a longer term goal.

Yeah, I think that about sums it up.

I’ve always loved shopping and the thrill of the hunt, but I hate the idea of spending more money than I have to. When I was younger, that translated into me buying horrible PVC boots that fell apart and acrylic sweaters that stretched out and pilled.

I was a hot mess, but I could get away with it at the time because I was still in school. But now that I’m a young, corporate-ladder climbing, upwardly mobile-type, career lady, I need to dress the part… even when I’m off-duty.

The good news is that buying higher-quality items doesn’t actually cost me that much more.  Because in truth, I was buying a lot of crap in large quantities previously.

I admit, I probably do still purchase in higher than necessary quantities (and heck, I’ll even agree that some crap does still manage to sneak into my wardobe every now and then, e.g. sequins leggings from Strawberry).

I was pretty psyched when I lucked out and won this blazer on eBay.  But I was even more stoked when I saw the exact same item at Century 21 (a discount retailer) for $200 just a few days later. That’s a 90% savings (not even factoring in the original price)!

Doin’ It Up In Cali

My husband and I decided to take advantage of our jetlag during our second day in San Francisco.  We woke up bright and early, rented bikes near Fisherman’s Wharf and set off for a ride across the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito.

Since we were gearing up for a more “rugged” excursion (for me at least), I decided to wear jeans and sneakers instead of my usual dress/sandal summer combo.  I’ll admit, I felt weird at first.  I’m actually way more comfortable in a halter dress and platforms, but when in Rome…

Here’s me doing the touristy thing and riding the famous cable cars:

Just after the last big hill (or so I thought) before crossing the bridge:

Finally made it to Sausalito, and I was just about pooped out:

All in all, we had an excellent time.

Especially after I stuffed my face with crab legs and mimosas…

Closet Confection: On the Waterfront

When: Saturday, April 24th

Where: Bookstore, Lucky Burger and a walkabout town

What: Hooded jacket (Rugby by Ralph Lauren), v-neck tee (J.Crew), jeggings (T.J. Maxx), yellow gladiator sandals (Cynthia Vincent for Target), brown suede handbag (Kenneth Cole)

I was SOOOOOOO TIRED earlier after doing a day of volunteering with Hands on New York.  I spent the entire morning helping to clean up and revitalize Momma & Poppa Jones Community Garden out in Brooklyn. I even made a few new “friends”.  Check me out with my buddy, Gilbert:

Afterwards, I came home, showered, and fell asleep on the couch while watching an episode of Murder She Wrote on Netflix.  When I woke up, I was ravenous but still a little sore from all the raking and weeding.  Needless to say, I just wanted to be cozy (but still cute).  So, I just threw on a hoodie, some stretchy jeans (which are apparently called jeggings now), and off I went to grab a burger and take a moonlit stroll with my guy.
