To My Friendsmirnoff-spiked-watermelonsmirnoff-watermelonsmirnoff-spiked-watermelon-2output_QriTka4th-of-july-outfit-2

Hola, Chicas!

With 4th of July right around the corner, I thought I’d share with you guys another one of my super simple (but oh so delicious!) entertaining ideas. I can’t think of a better way to cool off on a hot summer’s day than with a refreshing slice of icecold watermelon. And you know what makes watermelon even better? Smirnoff Watermelon! Yep, you read that correctly. These spiked watermelon wedges only take a few minutes to prepare, and your guests will happily thank you for the treat.

Here’s the rundown on how to prepare these frozen treats for your 4th of July get-together:

  1. Cut one 1 watermelon into wedges. If this task intimidates you, no need to fret. This video walks you through step-by-step.
  2. Once you’ve cut your wedges like a pro, gently place them into a large gallon size freezer bag.
  3. Carefully pour in enough Smirnoff Watermelon to soak the entire contents of your bag.
  4. Seal the bag (very important!) and place in freezer for at least 5 hours or overnight.
  5. Serve frozen slices to your guests, and enjoy responsibly. Remember, each slice equals 1 serving!

3 Lessons from My Dad – A Father’s Day Memoir + Nautica Voyage Giveaway

Even though my parents separated when I was very young and I grew up living with my mom, my Dad and I have always had a close relationship. I can honestly say that he’s been one of my biggest fans and supporters throughout my entire life. Our personalities are alike in so many ways, and I’m really coming to appreciate the advice and words of encouragement he’s given me over the years.

I’m usually not much for sappy sentiments, but with Father’s Day approaching this weekend, I wanted to share with you all some of my favorite pearls of wisdom I’ve received from dear old dad…

  1. Don’t give a damn what other people think about you. My dad has never been on to mince words (a trait I think we all inherited from my grandmother), and one of the most valuable pieces of advice he’s given me over the years has been to march to the beat of my own dream regardless of what other people think. In his eyes, as long as you’re being true to yourself and not hurting anyone else in the process you should always live and enjoy life in a way that makes you happy.
  2. Always keep a positive outlook. Life isn’t always peaches and cream, but sometimes you just have to pick your chin up and do the best you can. I remember calling my dad nearly in tears after moving into my first apartment after graduation and being met with a serious roach infestation (word to the wise – NEVER pick up furniture off the street… it’s probably there for a reason). His exact words to me were “Well… at least you’re in New York City, baby!”
  3. Dress for success and cook to impress. Ironically, my love for cooking and dressing well came from a different parent than you’d typically expect. My mom was always a tomboy growing up and had little interest in fashion. On the other hand, my Dad and uncles always liked to look “sharp”, and it’s a quality that I’m glad was passed down to me. My Dad is also a whiz in the kitchen and can bake and barbeque like nobody’s business.

I’m a notorious last-minute shopper, but this year I’ve come out ahead. For Father’s Day, I’m treating my dad to a Nautica Voyage gift set that I picked up at Macy’s in Herald Square earlier this week.

Closet Confection: Off to the Races w/ America’s Best Racing

What to Wear to the Race Track

Hello, Lovelies!

I hope you all had wonderful Labor Day weekends.  I personally had a great time, thanks to the AMAZING folks over at America’s Best Racing. To kick-off the long weekend, they invited a group of bloggers up to Saratoga Race Course to get the full VIP treatment. I’d never been to a horse race before, so I went in with zero expectations and wound up having an absolute blast.

My first major hurdle was figuring out what to wear to a race track.  We were instructed to pull out all the stops and don our finest racing attire.  So I made a beeline for eBay to scope out the perfect fascinator to go with my citrus-print dress.  While I was at it, I figured I might as well get fancy wrist gloves to match.  Eric got seersuckered up for the occasion, and off we went!

After arriving in Saratoga, we were treated to brunch (complete with an endless mimosa and bloody mary bar!) at Fasig-Tiptona historic horse auction house.  During brunch we got to hear from star jockey Taylor Rice about her experiences as a female in a male-dominated sport.  We also got a crash-course in horse-betting from an experienced gambling pro. As it turns out, there’s a lot more to it than simply plunking down a fistful of cash on your favorite horse. Sadly, I can’t say that I was a very good student since I wound up $15 in the hole after everything was all said and done!

Despite my loss, I still had a wonderful time exploring the gorgeous grounds, getting up close and personal with the horses in the paddocks, and simply enjoying a new experience. And I can’t wait to go back again!
