At-Home Hair Styling Experience with TresseNoire

Create the perfectcurls

I have a confession to make…

I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to my hair. In fact, in the 5+ years that I’ve been natural, I’ve gone to a hair salon ONCE! I kid you not. Back in my relaxer days, you could find me in a stylist’s chair at least once every two weeks. While I enjoyed the pampering, it was a bit of a pain having to trek out to the salon and back on the weekends… not to mention a major time suck. So over the past few years, I’ve  just taken matters into my own hands (literally!) when it comes to my hair. But that all changed recently when the lovely folks at TresseNoire reached out to ask if I’d like to test out their in-home salon experience. If you’re not yet familiar with TresseNoire, think of it as Uber for in-home natural hair care. The company has a team of professional (fully-vetted) hairstylists who do their work within the comfort of your home.

With spring right around the corner, I figured it was time for a fresh start and went for it. The first thing I did was set myself up with an account on the TresseNoire site and peruse the various styling options that were available, including blowouts, crochet braids, and many more. After settling on a cute flexi-rod set (which I’ve never attempted before on my own), I scheduled a convenient time for a stylist to come to my home. I was instructed to wash and dry my hair before my appointment, so I did a deep condition the night before and let it air dry in two french braids while I slept. My hair stylist, Jasmine, arrived right on time the next morning and immediately got to work on my mane…

She was very gentle with my hair and offered suggestions on keeping it moisturized and in tip-top condition in between salon visits (including regular trims, which I fully admit to neglecting, and making more time for deep conditioning). The control freak in me couldn’t help but check out all of the products she used in my hair, but I was very pleased to see her using Carol’s Daughter products which I often use and enjoy on my own.

She deftly set my hair with flexi rods in no time at all and then had me sit under a soft bonnet dryer for about 30 minutes. During this entire process, I was able to catch up on one of my favorite tv shows and get some work done on my laptop all in the comfort of my living room. And all the time I kept thinking, “a gal could certainly get used to this…”

After she removed the rods and fingerstyled my tresses a bit, I was greeted by…

… a head full of soft, springy curls!

I was so pleased with how my hair turned out… and even more so when my curls were just as poppin’ over a week later! If you’re a fellow naturalista in the NYC or Philly area, then I highly recommend giving TresseNoire a try. This experience was a complete game-changer for my busy, on-the-go lifestyle, so I will definitely be giving this service another go.

What style do you think I should try next?

Goddess Twists Hair Tutorial + Motions Hair Care Product Review

I’m pretty low-maintenance when it comes to hair care and styling, but several of you have asked how I achieve one of my favorite hairstyles as of late: Goddess Twists. When the lovely folks at Motions sent me a HUGE batch of products to test drive, I figured it would be the perfect excuse for me to get off my duff and give you a guys another hair tutorial.

This hairstyle is super quick and low-maintenance and is perfect for hot, humid summer days when you just don’t feel like doing much to your hair. The best part is that it takes zero braiding skills, since the hair is just two-strand flat-twisted. I did this style on freshly washed and blow-dried hair, and here’s a quick rundown of the products I used:

  1. Motions for Natural Textures Moisturizing Cleanser
  2. Motions for Natural Textures Smoothing Conditioner
  3. Motions for Natural Textures Heat Styled Straight Finish Sealer

Overall, I was very pleased with these products, especially the pre-wash detangling buter and the heat styler. Those two products will most definitely be added to my regular hair care rotation as they made detangling and blow-drying my kinky/coily natural hair a breeze!

Be sure to check out the video up top for my fullw review and detailed instructions on how to achieve this hairstyle.

Hello, Lovelies!

I generally don’t do much with my tresses, but it seems like I’ve been on a roll lately with the hair product reviews.  Today, I’m featuring two new gadgets that I’m very excited to share with you. I don’t know if you give much thought to your hairbrushes, but trust me, you will after reading this post.

First up is this sort of wacky-looking contraption that I previewed on Instagram over the weekend. It’s the Goody Quikstyle paddle brush, and it features microfiber bristles that claim to help dry your hair 30% faster. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was actually quite shocked at how effective it was.

I have very coily, kinky hair that loves to get tangled, so I always part my hair into 4 sections before washing to make things easier. I used the same shampoo and conditioner that I reviewed in this post, and finger-detangled my hair in the shower while it was still full of conditioner. After rinsing my hair, I went through my hair section-by-section with the Quikstyle brush. I try to minimize the amount of heat I put in my hair, so I was quite pleased that I barely even had to use my blow dryer afterwards.

Next up is Goody’s Tanglefix brush. My hair was pretty much detangled at this point, but I had very specific plans for this styling tool…

I only straighten my hair a few times per year. But whenever I do, I love using the “chase” method.  I usually see it done with a small-toothed comb, but I found the TangleFix to be much more effective. Basically, you place the brush in-front of the flat iron to provide tension that will help stretch your hair while you straighten it. It takes a bit of practice, but it’s smooth sailing once you get the coordination down.  I love straightening my hair this way because it allows me to get my hair pretty smooth with just one pass of the flat iron. Afterwards, I just gave each section a quick twirl at the ends for bouncy curls throughout my mane.

And there you have it folks. My total styling time was about 40 minutes (enough time to catch up on the last episode of How to Get Away With Murder). I’ll maintain this style throughout the week by using my satin covered sponge rollers at night and fluffing it out a bit in the morning.

If you’re interested in trying these products for yourself, Walgreens is offering a fantastic Buy One, Get One promotion valid on all Goody products (including both the Quikstyle and TangleFix brushes). You must use your Walgreens Balance Rewards card to get the promotional BOGO offer, and you can sign up in store if you are not a member already. The offer ends on 11/01/2014 and is available while supplies last.

And because I believe in sharing the wealth, I purchased an extra set of brushes out of my own pocket to give away to one lucky reader.  You can enter for a chance to win by choosing one or both of the options listed below.

Good luck!
