Last week, Eric and I took a few days off from work and played hooky around NYC. I’ve never been a fan of the stay-cation (the eye has to travel, after all!), but I have to admit that sleeping in late, visiting some of our favorite places in the city that we never have time for, and generally not having any sort of daily agenda was pretty amazing.

This particular day was damp and drizzly, and I used the unseasonably cool weather to break out my new Kate Spade striped dress that I scored for a song on eBay! I dressed it down here with sneakers and a jean jacket, but I think it would work equally well for work dressed up with a pair of smart red heels. In fact, that’s exactly how I wore it for a recent speaking engagement at the Javitts Center.

I’ve scored so many gems on eBay over the years, and this is one of my new favorites. Are any of you die-hard eBay shoppers? If so, what have been some of your best finds? For any newbies, would you be interested in me putting together an eBay bargain-hunting guide? Let me know in the comments!

I showed a sneak preview of this sweater and beret a few weeks back, and here’s the complete outfit!  I got into vintage clothing and thrift shopping shortly after starting this blog, and I’ve been building up a nice little collection over the years (you can check out my favorite shops around New York City here).

I put this outfit together after watching the documentary Advanced Style on Netflix over the holidays. I was so impressed with how much pride the women in the film took in their appearance. One of them even mentioned how she’d save an outfit for years until she had all of the key pieces (including the perfect hat!) to pull the look together. After all, “You don’t show a painting until it’s done!” That’s sort of how I felt when this ensemble came together. I’ve had an idea of this outfit floating in my head for a while, but most of the individual pieces were purchased years apart. In fact, many of my favorite outfits came about in the exact same way: finding a fabulous skirt here, a wonderful top there…and finally finding the absolutely perfect pair of shoes to match months (or even years) later.  Unlike the woman in the film, I do wear my pieces even before I find their perfect sole mates, but it always feels like kismet when I find just the right match.

So you guys know I didn’t go all the way to Italy without doing a bit of shopping… right?

Of course not!

We spent the last night of our journey in Milan – just a few hours for dinner and a bit of power-shopping.  I’d heard great things about Cos and had been silently sulking for ages that their good aren’t yet  available in the US.  Wondering what all the fuss was about, I wandered in and was immediately smitten.  The vibe was sort of like a more minimalist and sophisticated Zara, with higher quality fabric and construction (but still ultra-reasonable prices).  After trying on a million things in the fitting room and unsuccessfully convincing Eric to let me buy them all, I decided on the skirt I’m wearing above and another dress (which I promise to show you guys soon).

After swooning over Tibi’s silk faille midi skirt (and dying a little inside over the $500+ price tag), I was ever so happy to have found this little number for a fraction of the price.  For this outfit, I tried to go with a work-appropriate styling.  But honestly, I can’t wait to go all out and style it up for a fancy occasion.
