Closet Confection outfit of the day: Orange Crush

When: Monday, May 10th

Where: Work

What: Dress (Banana Republic), trench (H&M), shoes (Michael Kors), scarf (street vendor in Times Square)

I love so many things about this outfit, I’m not sure where to begin…

I was sort of on the fence about buying these shoes last year (couldn’t really justify the need for orange shoes), but I’m sooooo glad I did.  They just make me feel happy whenever I wear them.  And besides, I got them on clearance at Loehmann’s for like thirty bucks.

This scarf has huge sentimental value.  I purchased it the day after my husband and I got married.  It was unexpectedly windy, so I purchased it as we were leaving our hotel for brunch.  He calls it my “honeymoon scarf” and smiles every time I wear it. We also have a “honeymoon umbrella” that I’m banned from ever using because I have terrible luck with those things (they either wind up lost or broken).

The dress is also one of my favorites.  The color is great, the cut is super-flattering (you really can’t go wrong with a wrap dress) and the fabric is substantial and cozy.  I didn’t get to wear it much when I first bought it because another girl in my office already had the same one.  Luckily, we’ve both moved on to other gigs. So now I can wear it as much as I want without fear of an episode of “Who Wore It Best: Office Edition!”

Closet Confection: In the Limelight Marketplace

When: Sunday, May 9th

Where: A trip to Limelight Marketplace + BLT Burger

What: Dress (Forever21), black cardigan (Gap), ankle boots (Vince Camuto), handbag (Elliott Lucca), jewelry (various)

So, it happened again…  A major shopping outlet opens up in the city, and I had no clue about it.  I need to re-examine my Google Alerts!

At least I was only 3 days late to the party this time…

Folks, if you haven’t had the chance to checkout the new Limelight Marketplace in Chelsea, do so IMMEDIATELY wait a few weeks until the novelty has worn off and the place isn’t so crowded!

Actually, I’m not sure if that’s ever going to happen since they’re also slated to open up a Grimaldi’s Pizzeria—a restaurant who’s DUMBO location is notorious for having lines wrapped around the corner.

The 3-story market is housed inside of a historic 163-year-old church on 6th Avenue and 20th street and features more than 60 shops and vendors, including: MarieBelle (tasty hot chocolate), Hunter Boots (chic rainboots), Havaianas (trendy flip-flops), Soapology (refreshing skincare), and many others.

One store that I completely fell in love with was Brocade Home.  They showcase really beautiful and extremely feminine home furnishings.  If I were still single, I’d totally deck out my boudoir to look something like this:

Brocade Home

Overall, I give the new Limelight a thumbs up.  However, the marketplace does have a darker side which can be explored in a blog rant over at The Village Voice. I agree with a few of the article’s points (lack of seating, overpricing, overcrowding, etc.), but I think the author was way too harsh.  But then again, I am originally from the midwest… Perhaps there’s a small part of me that misses being a high school mall rat and the experience of shopping at dozens of stores without going outside.

When: Saturday, May 8th

Where: A Day in Times Square: Ripley’s Believe It or Not, The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, Masquerade Costume Shop, and dinner at PioPio

What: Dress & necklace (Forever21), navy blue cardigan ($15 Gap clearance sale), boots (Steve Madden),  belt (my mom’s from the 80s), handbag (DKNY via Loehmann’s)

Today, we decided to do the tourist thing and spend the afternoon in Times Square.  I usually avoid this area like the plague, but we actually had a lot of fun.  I was able to score free tickets to Ripley’s, and I must say that place is freakin’ awesome!  Robert Ripley collected some seriously weird stuff in his travels (shrunken heads, necklaces made out of mourning widow’s fingertips, and the skeleton of a two-headed lamb) and I ate up every minute of it.  I also ate up every last bit of candy in that bag I’m holding in the first pic (courtesy of Ripley’s candy store).

Afterwards, we saw a great play at the 2econd Stage Theater.  I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, but it wound up being a really great performance.  It was unlike anything I’d ever seen on stage before (in a good way).

Overall, hubby and I had a blast.  However, I do have one unfortunate event to report…

We had a good hour to kill before the play started and decided to head to the waterfront for a short walk.  When we were about a block away, we got caught in a really bad wind tunnel.  The glasses I’m wearing in some of my photos got knocked right off my face and skittered halfway down the street.  I retrieved them, but now they’re all scratched and dinged up!  Phooey!  Oh well, at least it wasn’t my Dolce’s…
