Friend Friday: Bloggers & Self Promotion

This week’s Modly Chic’s Friend Friday topic is on Self-Promotion.

A fellow blogger, Eva of Dressful, recently posted an article entitled, ‘Fashion blogs and self-promotion: How much is too much?’ It’s a quick read, and I definitely recommend checking it out. I haven’t experienced this personally, but a lot of bloggers participating in the 30 for 30 Challenge have reported a significant increase in traffic, but the average time readers spend on their sites has dropped significantly, and the comments have gone from thoughtful words to short, spammy, irrelevant remarks.

Check out my short video where I tackle the following questions:

  1. How do you promote your blog?
  2. In your experience what has been the most effective form of self promotion?
  3. Do you think there is a wrong way to promote yourself and your blog?
  4. When is comes to others pushing their product what annoys you?
  5. “It’s impossible to respect someone who wants all the attention, but adds nothing worthwhile to the conversation.” Do you agree?

Don’t worry -I will always make sure to leave a good comment. 🙂
I know what you mean though – when people write things like – “Look good!” and then you are reading someone else’s blog and you see the same comment “Look good!” LOL

Hey There! Great answers. I am noticing that the spammy comments annoyance is a trend among the friend friday posts I’ve read. Fortunately, I haven’t had too many of these. I do think there is a difference between short and sweet compliments and spam. Sometimes I don’t really have anything profound to say, but I do want you to know that I really like your outfit. In fact, if I saw you on the street I probably would have stopped to tell you. Sure, it’s not insightful but it its also not disingenuous. On the other hand if the compliment is followed by a “please check out my blog” or “please follow me” too, then it’s just a turn off. Nonetheless, I do think there is a difference between sincere, but short compliments and spam.

I actually don’t receive many spammy comments myself, but I have noticed it on other blogs (especially the really popular ones). Short and sweet are fine with me!

I worry sometimes about whether comments I leave could at times be seen as spammy. I don’t always have the time to leave people long messages but at the same time if I read and enjoy their blog then I want to leave a little note to say so.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I think the fact that you’re even concerned about it at all is proof that your heart is in the right place. Also, I have regular readers who leave short and sweet posts all the time, and that’s just fine with me!

Kendra, I loved this video and seeing/hearing your thoughts on self promotion (and of course your mention of the it list!)… self promotion is a tricky game and I loved your honest and well thought out answers/discussion. In response to your mention of 30/30 participants getting more traffic, but shorter times visited and less involved comments – I do agree with that. But I know personally I have started following a few new people that I found through the 30/30 challenge, but I personally feel like I need time to get to know them and their blogging style before I comment or make meaningful comments. Does that make sense? I am sure that I will follow them for a while and come out of my “hiding” more as I go along, but there is a little getting-to-know-you period too, at least for me when I find new blogs.

    Just my 2 cents!

Of course I mentioned the it list! It’s been great for me so far. I’ve also found a lot of great blogs through the 30for30 challenge and know exactly what you mean about following for a while before you can make meaningful comments.
