{Emporio Armani skirt, original price $500, marked down to $129 via Century 21}
As you all know, I’m doing this 30 for 30 challenge. And one of the rules is NO SHOPPING!
I actually don’t have a problem with not buying anything for a month. I mean, it does kinda suck, but I can get over it. However, window-shopping and trying things on (even if I’d never actually buy it) is one of my favorite leisure activities.
In fact, I’ll often try on zany outfits that border on costumes at vintage stores for fun. The fitting room is the best place to experiment with the newest trends without making any sort of commitment (or experiencing any public embarrassment). I’ve tried on many items that were so absolutely ridiculous that I burst out laughing at myself in the fitting room! I’ve also discovered some things that seemed questionable on the rack, but actually turned out to be really flattering.
Another trick of mine when I feel like I’ve been buying too much crap too often is to go into a really expensive department store like Barney’s or Bergdorf’s and try on a bunch of high-end designer items. Now this may seem counter-intuitive, but there’s a method to my madness. Seeing these pieces up close and personal, touching the fabric, paying attention to the structure of the garments, and feeling how they drape against the body really helps me appreciate high quality. I mean, it’s a lot less tempting to go out and purchase a cheap acrylic sweater after you’ve been cozying up in the best double-faced cashmere. The result is that I’m a lot more mindful of how I spend my money, and I’m more likely to work with what I have and save up for a really great coat or nice pair of shoes… which is usually cheaper in the long run when you factor in cost per wear.
With that being said, I’ve added a new feature to my Facebook Page called “Fitting Room Confidentials” where from time-to-time, I’ll post pics from my “shopping” excursions. For my first go-round, I took a little trip to Century 21, the holy grail of discount designer goods in NYC! Take a peak and let me know what you think!
Going forward, I’ll try to do a mix of vintage shops, thrift stores, discount retailers, high-end department stores and funky boutiques.
Cheers, and happy not-shopping!

My word, I love your take on both being brave in fitting rooms and re-establishing mindful purchasing habits by comparative shopping at nicer stores. These are two really smart ideas. Particularly once you have a decent paying job, it really is wise to know about some things that might be worth saving for. As to fitting rooms, the attendants never seem to care if I spend two hours in their store, why should I worry about it? To find truly great jeans I generally end up trying on seven pairs and walking away with only one or two. Time consuming, but persistence pays.
I’ve always wanted to go into Barney’s and just try on the designer shoes, feel what luxury really feels like. One of these days…
I love the pink dress and pleated skirt on you! I’m not doing the remix but am trying to stay away from shopping for the rest of the month.

Yes, those were definitely two of my favorites. Good luck with the shopping hiatus!
How fun! Will have to check it out! 🙂
i love this new feature! Im always taking pictures of what I try on in the dressing room and then I send to friends and take a poll on whether or not I should buy it.
That’s such a fun idea!
I’ve always been sort of intimidated to try on the expensive clothes at the beautiful department stores, but I can definitely see your point about how it could make one more mindful of what’s worth spending money on. You are just full of good ideas, aren’t ya!
I used to feel the same way, but I got over that really quickly. I’m also limited to about 10 good ideas per year, and I’ve been saving them up, lol!
This is such a brilliant insight and concept. A huge part of the fun are those fitting room experiments. I’m so doing this to get my “fix.” Love it! 🙂

Yep, sometimes a little retail therapy is just what a girl needs 🙂
I don’t have a problem not buying either… especially since my husband banned me from purchasing anything until Jan! This 30 for 30 challenge actually came at the perfect time! 🙂
I have a similar skirt (from Banana Republic) but somehow it looks better on you tho… 😛 Looking forward to your other remixes.
I also try on expensive items and often find that they’re not as amazing as I thought they’d be. So that helps curve the craving. Love that skirt, btw.
totally agree! expensive does not always equal quality.
Ummm I am dangerously coveting this skirt. I absolutely love it!! I love how you mixed it with a pattern too!
Wearing It On My Sleeves
yeah, that just happened to be the top i was wearing that day, but it totally works right?! i could easily have danced right out of the fitting room in that outfit.
recipe posted my friend 🙂

That’s a good way to get your shopping fix! Super adorable blog, I love it!

I do that too, trying things on in the fitting room instead of buying new items. But sometimes, I tempts me even more and I end up leaving the store with something in hand. Sigh. But I’m getting better at it and I think finding a good mix between quality and affordability is key. Good luck with the 30 for 30! =)
I love that skirt! I totally agree about trying on well made clothes and how it helps you stop buying a bunch of other items you don’t need. Can’t wait to see your other 30×30 outfits 🙂
I just found your blog and it’s so cute! You’ve got some strong will-power to try stuff on and not buy! It never works for me. haha

This sounds like it would be a lot of fun at a store with clothing out of my price range but I”m not so sure I could do it at a store that I would normally shop at. If I found something I really liked and it was on sale I’m not sure I could pass it up. You must have amazing will power!
One thing I miss about living in NYC is Century 21. Sigh…
You want to know what the really sick thing is about the 30 for 30? Instead of making me want to shop less, it makes me want to shop more! I look at the other participants blogs and think to myself, “Ooohhh…love the skirt, just you wait until December.” Also, I completely agree with you on buying quality over quantity. The fit of couture is completely different, and completely worth it. Getting it at a discounted price is even better.
