Closet Confection: The Neutral Zone

Neutral TonesNeutral Tones2Neutral Tones3Monogram Ring via oNecklaceRalph Lauren Knee High Boots
{Ralph Lauren Jacket  & Boots (also love these and these) , Zara Sweater, H&M Jeans and Necklace, Chloe Handbag, c/o oNecklace Monogram Ring}

This outfit is full of so many things I love right now that I’m not even sure where to begin, so here’s go nothin’:

  1. Favorite  “movie” jacket: I call it that because it’s made of a cozy thick sweatshirt material that makes it perfect for chilly movie theaters.  In fact, I was on my way to see Gravity when I stopped to snap these pics.  This piece is a relic from the now defunct Rugby line from Ralph Lauren, and it’s gotten LOTS of love over the years. It also feels like I’m channeling the fabulously dressed Olivia Pope whenever I wear it.
  2. “Lucky” handbag: Now I already told you guys how I scored this Chloe beauty for a ridiculous price last summer due to a computer glitch, but it truly is one of my best bargain finds to date.  I always expect something magical to happen every time I carry it.
  3. Monogram ring: I’ve been a sucker for customized baubles for a quite some time (as you can see).  So I was completely overjoyed when the generous folks over at oNecklace sent me this gorgeous monogram ring.  I’ve had it for a week, and I’ve been wearing it nonstop.  No fading or turning my fingers green (even though I’m a chronic handwasher), so I’m a pretty happy camper.  Fair warning: their website (and prices) are a little addictive.  I like my ring so much that I’m dipping into my own pockets for a monogram bracelet.
  4. Boot-scootin’ boogie: A good pair of boots are always at the top of my fall shopping list, and this year I scored big time at Century 21.  In addition to being the perfect calf size (sleek, but not tight, and no bunching at the ankle), they’re also made of good quality leather and are comfy to boot (pun intended).

Fitting Room Confidential: Milly x Banana Republic

Milly x Banana Republic{Medallion Print Dress, Chevron Stripe Dress, Eden Rock Printed Dress}

Milly x Banana Republic{Colorblock Pleated Patio Dress, Striped Fit and Flare Dress, Sleeveless Jacquard Dress}

Guys, you know how much I love a good designer collaboration, so it’s no surprise that I was chomping at the bit for the new Milly x Banana Republic collection to drop.  I swung by Banana on my way home, scooped up a bunch of dresses in my size, and off to the fitting room I went.  I only tried on a few of the dresses, but the entire collection also includes tops, shorts, accessories, and handbags..  Here’s my quick review of the items I tried on:

Medallion Print Light and flowy, this dress is very forgiving (especially in the waist), so you can definitely order your regular size or perhaps 1 size down even.

Chevron Stripe This was one of my favorites.  The chevron stripes are very flattering, and the cut of the dress worked well with my straight-ish figure. Though I could see it looking a lot different on someone with a small waist and wider hips.

Eden Rock Print The pattern on this one is beautiful and very Milly-esque.  The cut is form-fitting, but not tight (definitely work-appropriate).  Since I have a short torso, this dress wouldn’t work for me unless I had it taken up at the shoulders which was sort of a bummer

Colorblock Patio This was probably my least favorite.  The pleats started at a weird spot, the fit of the bodice was just sort of meh, and the length on the regular was a little too short for my taste (I like my maxis to skim the top of my toes. They don’t carry them in-store, but I would be interested to see how a Tall version would fit on me.

Striped Fit and Flare This was another favorite.  It also comes in solid navy, but I’ve been really into stripes lately.  I went up a size since it was snug in the bust area.  And even though I’m 5’7″, I found the petite version to fit much better because of its shorter shoulder straps (did I mention that I have a short torso?), and there was only about a 1-inch difference in length.

Sleeveless Jacquard This dress was pretty dope.  The color is definitely not for the faint of heart, but the classic shape made all the difference.  This one was also form-fitting (but again, not tight), and would be great for brightening things up at the office.

Overall, I was very pleased with the fit, quality and design of this collection.  If you’re a fan of Milly and would love to get it at a cheaper price point, you really can’t go wrong.  I hope Banana continues doing these types of collaborations (silently rooting for a DVF partnership!).

Other than a turkey avocado sandwich with walnut pesto, there’s nothing I like better during my lunch break than a wee bit ‘o window-shopping.  So when the folks over at Trinity Place Department Store invited me over to take a look around their new digs located just steps away from my office, I jumped at the opportunity.

Trinity Place has a great mix of funky, moderately priced clothing and accessories, and the selection reminded me very much of some of the fun high-street stores that I visited during my recent trip to London.  While there was an array of cute dresses on display (mainly for casual day wear), my eyes were immediately drawn to this bold graphic sweater.  It’s definitely a departure from my standard fare, but I love it to pieces (and I may or may not have worn it 3 days in row already).

If you’re in the area (the store’s right down the street from Century 21 near World Trade Center), I highly recommend stopping by and taking a look.  The staff is genuinely friendly and helpful, and they carry a lot of unique statement pieces.  In addition to TONS of girly frocks, shoes, handbags and accessories, they also carry menswear and a small selection of furniture and home goods.  For those of you unable to make it to NYC, no need to fret… they also have an online shop!
