A few weeks back, Eric and I had the time of our lives at the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Govenors Island. We first discovered the event several years ago while exploring the island by bike. Much to our delight, we stumbled upon a large cluster of stylish New Yorkers who looked like they’d just stepped out of a time capsule. It’s been on my agenda to become a part of the spectacle ever since, and this year we finally got our acts (and our outfits!) together to make a day out of it.
Since we’ve got a few trips planned this summer, I didn’t want to break the bank on my outfit. So I was elated when I found this pretty drop-waist dress on sale. Nailing the 20’s look is all about the details (aka accessories), so I sourced the rest of my outfit from vintage shops and online to get the best bang for my buck. A swipe of red lipstick and a smoky eye later, and I was ready to roll… or should I say swing?!
If you’re in the NYC area next month, you’ve got one more chance to make it out to the festivities and see what it’s all about for yourself during the weekend of August 13th-14th. Plenty of tasty food options are available onsite, but be sure to bring a blanket or two to spread out. I purchased a parasol beforehand purely for stylistic reasons, but it turned out to be quite useful under the scorching sun (along with my japanese folding fan!). Dressing in 20s attire is optional (and you’ll see a WIDE range of interpretations)… but why would you want to miss out on half the fun?!
