{OLD NAVY Dress (50% off  w/ code ‘MAY’), FOREVER 21 Fedora, RALPH LAUREN Bucket Bag, VINCE CAMUTO Ankle Boots}

On my second day of playing tourist in my hometown, we stopped by Hitsville USA (aka the Motown Museum). I passed by this place countless times on my way to high school in Detroit, but never took the time go in and check out this national treasure. Our tour started with a short film about Berry Gordy and how he got his start with an $800 loan from his family. Afterwards we got to walk in the footsteps of world-class performers like Stevie Wonder, The Jackson Five and The Supremes! To say that the experience was surreal and inspiring would be an understatement!

For this trip I packed mostly easy, effortless pieces like this Old Navy jersey cotton dress. I can’t say enough good things about it and plan on going back for it’s short-sleeve counterpart for the warmer months ahead.

Edsel Ford House {Gingham Dress + Ankle Boots}

Black & White Gingham Dress

Black & White Gingham Dress
Black Fedora & Bucket Bag

{H&M Gingham Dress & Fedora, ALDO Ankle Boots, PRADA Sunglasses, RALPH LAUREN Bucket Bag}

Even though I was born and raised in Detroit, it wasn’t until I moved away that I truly began to appreciate all that the city has to offer. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed playing tourist in my hometown. Every time I go back, I make it a point to visit someplace new. On my last visit, Eric and I took a trip to the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House along the shores of Lake St. Clair. We arrived when they first opened and were treated to a private tour of the estate.

Over the years, we’ve toured  our fair share of stately mansions – including the homes of the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts and Hersheys – but the Ford House is definitely at the top of my list of favorites. I donned my new gingham dress and giddily twirled through the gardens as we explored the grounds on our own. Before leaving, we enjoyed a delicious lunch onsite at the Cotswold Cafe. We couldn’t have asked for a more picture perfect spring morning for our excursion.

Sneak Peek

Anthropologie Shirtdress, Butler Institute of Art {ANTHROPOLOGIE Shirtdress (also picked up this one ON SALE!), FOREVER 21 Fedora, RALPH LAUREN Bucket Bag, VINCE CAMUTO Ankle Boots}

On our recent roadtrip to Detroit, we decided to stop and stretch our legs in Youngstown, Ohio where we visited the Butler Institute of Art – the very first museum dedicated exclusively to American Art. The collection was very well thought out and had an eclectic and interesting mix of styles and time periods to peruse, including everything from fashion to folk art and impressionism to digital mediums. The best part for me was the museum’s size. It took us around 90 minutes to stroll through and visit each exhibit without feeling rushed, and it turned out to be just the break we needed before making the final stretch to Detroit.

Since the weather was nice, I opted for this festive poplin shirtdress that I scooped up on the clearance rack (my favorite place). I kept the look pretty casual with ankle boots, a fedora, and my beloved crossbody bag that’s always on steady repeat in my wardrobe. If you recall from my recent post, I could pretty much live in shirtdresses this time of year. This particular one travels really well thanks to the substantial fabric and bold print that helps to camouflage any wrinkles. It’s sold out online, but I’ve seen it pop up in stores recently – so you might still get lucky. If not, Anthro still has a pretty good lineup of gorgeous alternatives that I’ve shared above… including this beauty that I also picked up recently.
