Last month, Eric and I had one of our most fun and adventurous vacations to date: a 7-day Alaskan cruise, followed by a few days in Denali National Park. Join me over the next few days as I recount those memories and share with you my Alaska Travel Diary.

After embarking on Holland America’s Oosterdam in Vancouver, we spent a relaxing day at sea sailing towards the Inside Passage. After this much needed day of rest, we were super amped and ready to reach our first port of call: Ketchikan, AK!

I knew we were pretty much guaranteed rain in Ketchikan (the average rainfall is 152 inches per year, while the US average overall is 37 inches!), so I happily broke out my new rain jacket and bean boots. It’s hard to believe that just two days earlier, I was in sandals and sundresses! Since Ketchikan is known as the salmon capital of the world, I also thought it would be fun to don my fisherman sweater in honor of the occasion.

We arrived at 6am, and our ship was first in port that day which meant the streets were nearly empty upon our arrival. The town was slowly coming to life as we left the ship, but we enjoyed our first peaceful moments among these tranquil views. The weather was quintessential Ketchikan that day: slightly cool with a gentle mist in the air. Continue Reading

Earlier this month, Eric and I jaunted off to Alaska for the adventure of a lifetime! I can’t wait to tell you all about our journey in the coming week, but first I want to start off with the time we spent in Vancouver before embarking on our cruise. This was my first time venturing off to the West Coast of Canada, and I can’t wait to return to explore it properly. Nevertheless, we managed to cram A LOT into our short 36-hour stay, and hopefully my experiences can serve as a guide as you plan your own Vancouver travel itinerary.

Vancouver Mountains

My breath was taken away before we even landed at our destination. There was barely a cloud in the sky as we flew over the rugged Canadian landscape and enjoyed stunning views like this. Living in Manhattan for the past 15 years, I’ve grown so accustomed to city life, and nothing really prepared me for all of the natural beauty I was about to experience during this trip. This was only a taste of what was yet to come, and I could barely contain myself!

I can’t think of a better way to kick off the summer than with a relaxing weekend in Bar Harbor. Eric and I first made our way to this summer playground almost two years ago, and we’ve been itching to go back ever since. That time around, the island was covered in a shroud of thick fog – a stark contrast to the clear blue skies that greeted us on our most recent visit.

We took full advantage of the weather and made our way to the summit of Cadillac Mountain for stunning views of the shoreline below. After making our way down, we spent part of the afternoon on a nature cruise. The waters were too rough for the whale-watching cruise we had originally planned, but two bald eagle sightings more than made up for our unexpected change in plans! After our exploration at sea, we settled in to Bar Harbor Inn for cocktails overlooking Frenchman Bay.

Whenever  I pack for a trip, I often can’t help but plan my outfits around a central theme. In this case, I chose… STRIPES! I can’t tell you how simple it was to pack for my getaway once I’d settled on one key element. I simply tossed 3 long sleeve striped tees into my bag, picked coordinating pants and shoes, and was on my way.` My husband joked that I was dressed more for the French Riviera than for the New England Coast, but I can live with that.

I kept accessories to a minimum since this was just a short excursion, but one piece that Eric and I both made sure not to leave home without were our new wood watches given to us by the lovely folks at Jord.  Named after the Swedish word for earth, soil or land, Jord is dedicated to making simple, sustainable, and efficient timepieces crafted from high-quality wood.  We were both impressed by the natural beauty of the wood grain and the fact that the watches blend seamlessly with just about any casual outfit. Oh, and another unexpected bonus is that they give off the most delicious pine scent when you wear them!

If you’re thinking about getting one of your own (or for a friend!) and would like to see how hundreds of other folks have styled their Jord timepieces, be sure to check out the hashtag #JordWatch on Instagram.
