Miami Vice {Old Navy Striped Sundress + Straw Tote}

I’m always a sucker for easy cotton pieces when it’s warm out, and this Old Navy striped sundress was perfect for exploring under the blazing Miami sun. I paired it with my trusty straw hat and matching tote that I picked up from J. Crew a couple of years ago. They’ve held up well over time, and they’re my constant companion for beach getaways because they’re so light and easy to pack. I love classic pieces like these that never seem to go out of style and can be mixed-and-matched a gazillion different ways.

I’m generally the gal who sits on the sidelines watching trends come and go like the changing of the tides. But every now and then, something comes by that completely rocks my world. And this season my friends it’s… the off-the-shoulder top! Prepare to see A LOT of them on the blog in the coming weeks. If you’ve been keeping up with my real-time adventures on Instagram and SnapChat, then you’ve already been warned. What can I say? When I find something I like, I run it into the ground tend to stick with it!

Speaking of things I’m obsessed with lately…

I recently took a (short-lived) break from wearing high heels, but now I’m back with a vengeance. However, after visiting the Shelly’s of London showroom a few weeks back, I’ve been passing over my stilettos in favor of chunky platform heels like the ones you see here. Besides serving up some serious 70s-by-way-of-the-90s nostalgia, they give me the height I crave (useful for towering over my fellow straphangers during my morning commute), while keeping me stable on those mean NYC streets.

And if you haven’t heard of Shelly’s of London yet, definitely check them out. They’ve been peddling funky kicks in the UK since 1945, and now they’ve crossed the pond to make a splash stateside.

How to Wear Stripes {J. Crew Black & White Striped Dress}

Black & white stripes are one of my favorite prints, and they work perfectly on those days when I’m short on time and pressed for what to wear. And let’s face it, that’s pretty much everyday in my world! But if you’re worried about stripes making you look fat… don’t be! The trick to making stripes work is to either A) not give a damn, or B) find the size and shape that work for your body type.

I tend to go for option A most often, but since I did title this post How to Wear Stripes, here are a few things that I’ve learned from experience:

  • Chevron stripes work on just about anyone
  • Vertical stripes can be elongating (just be careful you don’t wind up looking like Beetlejuice)
  • Small horizontal stripes across the chest can look a little wonky on us busty gals (especially in stretchy materials)
  • When in doubt, add a pop of color with accessories (red, yellow, hot pink and cobalt blue all look especially fetching)

Below are my favorite black & white striped dress picks at the moment…
