Candy Striper

Fall Transitional Pieces, Strip Zara Shirt Dress, NYC Fashion Blogger, Closet Confections{ZARA Dress and Heels (old, but similar here), H&M Earrings (similar), J. CREW Necklace (had this for YEARS and LOVE it!), CAMBRIDGE SATCHEL Bag}

It’s hard for me to resist a bold stripe, so I knew I had to have this dress as soon as I saw it. This is one of the funnest (pretty sure that’s not a word, but stick with me) pieces in my current rotation. I paired it with matchy-matchy red shoes and bag, along with copious amount of pearl accessories.

About the Fit:
This dress runs very true to size and has a slightly fishtail hem that provides a little extra coverage in the back. It’s more of a trapeze shape with no waist line, which means you’ll have to cinch it with a belt if you want more definition. I’ve worn it that way as well and love how it looks. I opted to skip the belt on this particular occasion because I knew I’d be sitting at a desk all day and wanted to be comfy. If the red is a bit bold for your taste, the dress also comes in hunter green and is just perfect for this time of year.

The weather’s really been playing with my emotions lately. One day the temps are up, the next day they’re down. It’s enough to make a gal’s wardrobe spin. That’s why I’ve been relying on a few transitional pieces that work well for the chilly mornings we’ve been having, yet don’t cause me to melt into a puddle when the mercury rises unexpectedly throughout the day.

I love the classic hunter green color of this dress which just screams fall. And I love it even more paired with the autumnal shades of my bag and shoes.

About the Fit:
I accidentally ordered this one size larger than normal but decided to keep it anyway. I think the oversized look gives it more of a casual feel (and will also come in handy during Thanksgiving and throughout the holidays!), so I kept it rather than going through the hassle of mailing it back or doing an in-store return. With that being said, I think you’d be safe going with your normal size. Another thing to note is that button-front shirtdresses like this can sometimes gap and pull with larger bust sizes. This one gave me zero issues even without a minimizer – Score!

Dressing for this time of year is always tricky…

My heart longs for cableknit sweaters and over-the-knee boots, but these darned 80+ degree temps just won’t let me be great dang-nabbit! On the bright side, I have a good time chuckling at my fellow New Yorkers hell-bent on dressing for fall, weather-be-damned determined to be fashion-forward. Yeah, I’m looking at you sweaty lady on the train melting under a leather moto jacket. And you too, sir, sweltering in a sidewalk cafe with your thick shawl-neck cardigan.

Although I have officially put away the seersucker and my collection of white eyelet sundresses, I still can’t bring myself to make the full wardrobe switch just yet. To get by, I’ve been relying on pieces in lightweight fabrics but darker colorways that are more fitting for the season. This dress is the perfect example of that, and I knew that when I picked it up recently that it would be the perfect piece to wear now with sandals and bare shoulders and pair later with ankle boots and a moto jacket.

About the Fit:
I went with my usual size in this one, and the stretchy material makes it very forgiving. I have a freakishly short torso, so I had my tailor take the shoulders up for about $10 which made a world of difference.  I was on the fence about the asymmetrical hemline at first, but it actually turned out to be quite flattering.

Below are a few more transitional dresses that’ll work just as well now as they will later in the season with addition of a few layers. And the best part…? They’re all on sale!
