No-Heat Stretched Curls {Featuring Head & Shoulders}

Beauty, Product Reviews

This post is brought to you in partnership with Head & Shoulders. All views and opinions expressed are my own. Thanks so much for supporting the brand that make this blog possible!

Instead of winding down for the year, December has turned out to be one of my busiest months ever. Between finishing up last-minute client projects and prepping for the holidays, I have almost ZERO downtime for personal maintenance. That means that the few moments I do have to spare on my beauty routine have to be spent wisely. You guys know that I’m generally no-fuss, no-muss when it comes to styling my natural tresses, so I just wanted to share my one of my easy styling methods – that I picked up from my Granny – in this quick tutorial. And I also want to share my review of Head & Shoulders Green Apple Shampoo.

My hair is prone to dryness, so I use a sulfate-free shampoo about 80% of the time. But recently, I’ve started a new exercise regimen which means a lot more sweating that can at times lead to a dry itchy scalp. So for those times when I need a little extra sudsing power, or when my scalp feels like it needs some extra TLC, I’ll sometimes reach for my hubby’s Head & Shoulders. For the 11+ years that we’ve been married, this is the only shampoo I’ve ever seen him use. He swears by the Original version, so I was pretty stoked to test out the Head & Shoulders Green Apple Shampoo for a change.

If you ever use Head & Shoulders, the first thing you’ll notice is the mild tingly sensation in your scalp. This comes from their proprietary 1 percent pyrithione zinc technology, combined with fresh scent of green apple. Afterwards, my scalp felt refreshed, and my hair was clean but didn’t have that stripped feeling that some shampoos can leave you with. I followed up with a 15-minute deep condition and wrapped my hair in a microfiber towel after rinsing.

After my towel soaked up most of the moisture from my hair, and my strands were no longer sopping wet, I reached for my trusty satin rollers. These have been a staple in my beauty arsenal for the past 30 years. Back when I was a little girl, one of my favorite things to do was spend the weekend at my grandmother’s house. On Saturday morning, we’d take a trip to the beauty parlor to get our hair done. And at night, she set my hair satin-covered sponge rollers and dress me in one of her old nightgowns before bed. In the morning, we’d wake up and take my rollers out before getting dressed up for church. So everytime, I wear my hair like this I have sweet memories of the time we shared together.

By the time I woke up in the morning, my hair was completely dried. After taking my rollers out, I then applied a bit of hair oil to the palms of my hands and lightly rubbed my fingers through my hair and scalp to help break up the curls. My hair was soft, bouncy and free from product-buildup after using the Head & Shoulders Green Apple Shampoo the night before. And my scalp still felt great and not at all tight, itchy or flaky.

After breaking up the curls, I then brush my hair up towards the crown of my head and secure it in place with an elastic headband that I cut open in the center and wrap around my head to make a ponytail. I like using the elastic headbands as opposed to regular hair-ties because it gives my hair a fuller look and is way less tension on my edges. Sometimes when my hair has extra slips, I secure the band in place with 2 or 3 bobby pins as well.

This style is a lifesaver because of the time it saves me. Just 10-15 minutes to put my hair in rollers the night before, and another 3-5 minutes of styling in the morning. And because the curls were set while my hair was still damp, this style will easily last 3-4 days just by wrapping in a satin scarf or bonnet overnight. It doesn’t get any better than that!

You can find the Head & Shoulders Green Apple Shampoo and many more Head & Shoulders products on Amazon! Having your hair products shipped to your home is a huge time-saver.

Simply Entertaining: Cast-Iron Pizza Recipe + Kuvée Wine Review

Product Reviews, Recipes

kuvee-wine

Once a month, my friends and I get together for Girls Night. We rotate houses each time and gather for a home-cooked meal, a terrible Lifetime movie… and copious amounts of vino! With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season upon us, I knew that I wanted to keep things simple and easy for our upcoming gathering. But as a hostess, I feel it’s my duty to accomodate everyone’s tastes and preferences as much as possible. So I decided what better way to cover all my bases than with individual cast-iron pizzas and an assortment of wines from Kuvée?!

kuvee-a

In case you haven’t heard. Kuvée’s Smart Wine Bottle is a clever gadget that slows down the oxidation process, allowing you to enjoy your wine for up to 30 days after opening (10 times longer than regular wine). The concept is perfect for intermittent wine drinkers like myself that fear wasting bottles after opening. And as a bonus, the bottle possesses an undeniable cool-factor that will intrigue your guests while satisfying different palates.

Here’s how it all works…

kuvee-b

The Kuvée system works with special plastic wine cartridges that you pop into the dispenser. There are currently 48 different selections to choose from – all from the California and Pacific Northwest regions. You can easily switch between different bottles throughout the evening with the press of a button.

Once you insert a cartridge, the bottle automaticay recognizes the wine and gives you details about it including the type of grape and alcohol content. After you take a sip, you can also give a personal rating which makes it great for building up a catalog of your favorites and finding similar wines in the future.

No wine, no problem! If you find yourself running low, you can easily scroll through the wi-fi connected Wine Library and order right from the bottle. The wines then arrive at your doorstep a few days later. How cool is that?!

If you’re looking to splurge a little on the perfect gift for the person who has everything, this is definitely an option worth considering. You can order Kuvée online for $199, and the set also includes 4 starter bottles (valued at $100). So all-in-all, it’s a pretty sweet deal.

The pinot noir I’m sipping here was the perfect accompaniment to my pepperoni pizza. Speaking of pizza… you didn’t think I’d leave you hanging on the recipe did you?!

The instructions are dead easy, but the taste is incredible. You can make your own crust ahead of time using the recipe below, or simply use a store-bought dough (or one from your favorite local pizza joint) if you’re pressed for time. Once your guests arrive, you can simply lay out the different toppings and let them choose their favorites.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 tsp. active dry yeast
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 cup cold water
  • 1 tbs. olive oil
  • 1/3 cup marinara sauce
  • 4 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Toppings of your choice

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, yeast, and salt in a medium bowl
  2. Stir in cold water and combine
  3. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap
  4. Allow dough to rest on the countertop for 12 to 18 hours until it doubles in size
  5. Sprinkle the dough with 1/2 tablespoon of flour
  6. Lightly stir until dough forms into a ball
  7. Grease a 10 inch cast iron skillet with olive oil
  8. Place the dough ball in the greased skillet, spreading close to the edge
  9. Cover the pan and let rest for 1 hour
  10. Preheat oven to highest temperature. (~500-550 degrees F)
  11. Add sauce, cheese, and toppings to the risen dough
  12. Start cooking the pizza on a stove-top burner on medium high for 3 minutes
  13. Place in preheated oven and bake 12-15 minutes

Sweet Little Nothings {October Favorites}

Lifestyle, Product Reviews

I’ts been ages since I’ve done one of these, but I just wanted to share a quick rooundup of all the things that made me smile during the month of Otcober. Enjoy!

blue-yellow-faux-fur-stole-2

This awesomely tacky faux fur wrap from Zara. It’s a slight departure from my normal style, but saw it as I was leaving the store and couldn’t resist rushing back to the cash register to bring it home with me.

exploring-washington-heights-3

Exploring my new neighborhood in Washington Heights. Eric and I lived her for a couple of years when we first got married, but we moved back last month after being away for 7 years! We’ve fallen in love with it all over again and continue to discover new things almost every day.

There’s nothing I love more this time of year than curling up with a good book and a mug of hot cocoa. It’s like PopSugar Must Have read my mind when they sent me this month’s #MustHaveBox to try. And because sharing is caring, here’s $5 off your FIRST Must Have Box with code SHOP5. http://bit.ly/psmusthave1116

Fall Foliage in Upstate New York

Watching the leaves turn this time of year is always a treat. I’m still bummed I missed out on apple picking this season, but this stunning view in Upstate New York more than made up for it.

And last, but defnitely not least… I celebrated my birthday this month! We kept things pretty low-key this year, but I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Per Se with a cozy table for two overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park. And afterwards, we went to the Metropolitan Opera to watch Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
